And I find the refference to AOL.com and firstposter to be specist and offensive. Just because I am not human that does not make me a stupid troll/spammer.
It's not that crazy, haven't you ever seen one of those science fair, solar windmill thingies ? That is running in a vacuum - no wind either.
The concept is sound, and remember in space you have perpetual motion, you only need the sail and some sunlight to start you off, then your flying and you can litterally "surf" on the orbits created by celestial bodies so as to remain in motion.
Imagine, setting off with the sun behind you towards jupiter, by the time you get there even a heavy ship might be traveling at 400 to 500 miles and hour (keep in mind your curve starts low but is an exponential curve) then slingshot around jupiter and come arround at about 7000 mph. From there it's clean sailing all the way to andromeda or whereever, with no extra ennergy. Asuming of course that by then we have someone who can survive the 180 year trip and get to come back.
This tech will not ever put up or restore satelites, but it will be a great, efficient means for space-build craft to explore other planets, galaxies and one-day maybe even star systems.
I wonder which of the two companies will be stuck with the actimates barney... I'll bet the loser in that dodge-ball match, then again these are microsoft programmers.
Cut his balls off...if you can't find them settle for his eyes, then feed them to him with rice and ketchup. Thereafter proceed to have him raped by winnie the pooh, And finally drown him in a urinal ! Shooting is way too slow.
I still can't figure out what it could possibly be worth to enhance a chipspeed beyond the capabilities of the system it's in. If you want a margin, your 1Ghz chip should still get at least an 800Mhz system. That is a 20% Margin - A LOT. In short instead of all them fast CHIPS, we need to work on fast SYSTEMS. That means:
3D Accelarator and RAM manufacturers should be working on methods to bring down production costs...so these things can become more affordable.
BUS speeds needs to be enhanced. USB is getting there, but it's not enough...and IDE sucks - and we really need faster hard-disks.
Cache sizes and Access speeds needs to become a lot higher.
All these things means that with our current chipsets we have the potential for much faster computers...where are they ?
PS. That beer/mdma guy is like Barney, everybody wants him dead.
I am a Linux user, GPL Coder (see CD-Tux) and LUG-Chairman. And I rant about Microshit! I especially rant about their lack of inovation. Linux may appear less inovative because....we follow standards and we try to maintain compatibility. Inovation also implies enhancement (not decompatibilizing extension) seen that way, Linux is one giant inovation. Examples of inovation on Linux:
DEVFS (The linux version far outdoes any other)
DEB Packages
RPM (To a lesser degree)
/proc (Correct me If I am wrong on that one)
Python
Tcl/TK
The Kernel - Who will deny that linux 0.1 was a great idea, even if it wasn't the very first - Linuz made it work.
WTF are you on ? MS did not invent IE, it was bought, or stolen (depending on who you believe) from starsoft...I might have that company name wrong, they went bankrupt shortly after so I ain't heard it in 5 years. That is how microshit keeps the startups happy.
Need I remind you that Vinod Valipil, former microserf left them to join a Linux startup in Silicon Valley, because Vinod liked to create, design...inovate!
But at least a loan shark won't advertise his fin.
Spielberg and Lucas should team up for a new movie called "death of the empire", with Bill Gates as Jaws the Shark and Linuz Torvalds as Linux Skywalker, the hero who guts him 52 times with a lightsaber....mmmm
Scientific research is an order from God ! It may surprize you to learn that the same technology that led to the nuclear bomb was also vital to the developement of the computer. You think this is new ? E-mail is to the postal system what genetic engineering is to inbreeding ! Quoting the Bible "There is nothing new in the world" Yes perhaps inbreeding was about the dumbest of all human customs, but frankly there were some pretty good reasons stated for it. Hopefully with GE we will be able to gain it's good side without it's bad side, in other words, find a pre-birth vaxine for cancer or even aids. If somebody uses it to make and clone giant soldiers, that is a crime on his side, not on the conscience of the people who developed the tech behind it. If someone used a Playstation 2 to build a warhead guidance system (that possibility got slashdotted) would you blame sony ?
Yip, the 3rd world country with the 1st world tech!
Two cities of reall interest: Johannesburg, Host too two sepperate LUG's one for Linux Proffessionals with about a $100 one-time joining fee, and the other a standard run-of-the-mill free-for-all-lug with about 500 members. Severall Major IT companies in the City and surrounding towns including branches of Mecer, IBM and Microsoft (the one that got bombed) bringing us to the con, the highest crime-rate in the world, a city for martial-artsy adventurous techies.
Pretoria: Home of the 3rd largest LUG, crime-rate extremely low (leading to Johburgers calling it boring). Politticall and live/gothic music capitall of the country. Also home to the largest university outside of America famous for having "higher standards than any european university". Birthplace of programs like mcedit and cd-tux. The city plays host to branches of severall other large IT firms including Mustek, Compaq and Amiga. This is also where you will find the largest engineering firms, developement companies ISP's et all.
{My appologies for the daffy duck quote, naah scratch that, I ain't sorry}
Don't you find it crude that microsoft's prime programming language would be a language created 30 years ago as a means of teaching computer illitterate people how to code. The B in Visual Basic stands for "beginner's"
VB Developers are a a lot more like professional level editors for quake than they are like Programmers.!!!! And it took me just 3 minutes to not only force a former VB Dev that I could outcode him with one hand using vi and tk, but also make him want to learn Linux coding, he is still learning
I stick to my opinion, nothing can influence coding time except:
Competence of the coder
Strength of the language
RAD Tools cut development time but multiply debugging time exponentially, because half the code is not actually written by the programmer.
Oh, and to the guy who quoted "real programmers don't use pascal" PASCAL Is the most structured, syntactically simple (case Insensitive) Language ever created. Nicolas Wirth is a Human god on a near Torvalds Level, and I love it. On Linux a good pascal compiler KIXXASS.
Jeez, Gotta Love South-Africa! That show was prime-time tv. when I was litle! And now that I am big prime time is filled with Knight Rider and A Team ReRuns. The last show to be bought by the SABC must have been the first season of Beverly Hills 90210, in 1997!. Luckilly, these days, we got satelite... mmmm. MTV !
If this be offtopic I ask thy forgiveness most solemnly, but that news site is in South-Africa, So I am wondering if it was posted by a South-African, I mean most American's don't even know what country.za is, no offense. NE-Ways, If you or anybody else here is in south-africa, the Pretoria LUG has been discussing the really bad performance of South-Africa at counter.li.org (nu. 74) I do not believe we lack users, just that we don't register... Ok, before I post again I'll make sure I have something to say.
Does this mean I can stop pretending to be nice ? I can say things like: "FreeBSD will suck until it's POSIX compatible." Or "Gnome Sux because by default a newly opened app is not the active window"
Hey this is fun !
Perhaps we should post a story with no content just so we can have a day of fun trying to out-troll each-other !
Interesting point, but you should keep in mind that from the POV of the typicall corporate suitguy, it's better to pay M$ to maybe fix a problem sometime in the next year than to run an OS without a really rich guy behind it that need not be fixed in the first place.
Frankly if we need to get a rich guy selling Linux for it to be a corporate OS success, then I'm not so sure I want it to be a corporate success.
Especially since that would imply either that Torvalds get brainwashed by Bill The Borg's microdroid borg army, or that someone cheats him really badly.
Is is really Linux if it has an IPO ? Since when is money important to Open Source ? Hence I continue to use debian, admittedly there are features it doesn't have yet. But it is no doubt the last REAL Linux around. Developed by the comunity and designed to be as cheap as possible to obtain. That is Linux, and what is the use ?
For once I am first, and in the time this stupid microsoft proxy server takes to upload pages, I become last. Gotta say though, Caldera and Corel colectively make up the worst two things in the history of Linux, Corel for making debian unstable (and other products of theirs don't help their status either) and caldera for being a buncha dishonest greedy slobs. My.000002 cents worth.
I wonder what would happen if I stuck an itanium to the end of my home-built beowulf cluster ?
Come to think of it, if you stick a 64Bit processor in a 32 bit cluster, will it even work ?
With linux as the big-boy OS here for a change, I'll bet were gonna be seeing a lot of comercial 64Bit itanium based beowulf clusters. Just imagine how much phun you could have with one of those. Even if you only cluster 4 processors. Now all we need is for someone to build a version of the dumb 3D engin with support for multiprocessing. So I can play DOOM supercomputer style.
I now this will be moderated funny, but You should have gotten Score 0: Flamebait. you are so sexy No offense but that guy who wants to fuck misty suddenly seems a lot more normal. I love computers too (though I prefer my two-processor home-made beowulf-supercomputer to any PDA) but sheez man, there is a very thick line between geek and gross, and your on the wrong side.
I am a PARROT
I have a Karma of 7

Was it Bruce Perens who wrote the sci-fi story about a space..eh..sail..eh spacysailships holding a race around the earth ?
Of course their sails were solar powered, but it's kina scary how sci-fi can sometimes hit home ?
I just hope apocalypse now wasn't that acurate...unless I get to be the hero and save the world of course.
PS. Slashdot has now surpassed scandinavia in it's troll population !!!!
I wonder which of the two companies will be stuck with the actimates barney...

I get the impression you inject yourself with mayonaise or brakefluid or Microsoft Koolaid or something.
Microsoft has a FIN, just like every other shark.

And coming from a Libertarian thats bad
Would somebody please flame the damn beerspammer !
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT THE NECTAR OF THE GODS IS VODKA !
Ask James Bond !
Qouting an e-mail discussion I had with hemos:
:-)
"Thanks for proving that Linux guys can get girls too"
"And we can get the best girls !"
The defence rests !
