  1. Re:PS2 - It's worse than Xbox on Sony Playstation 2 North America Launch · · Score: 1

I kinda think you must be on crack if you think all the games for DC are crap. There are tons of good games for the Dreamcast. Soul Calibur is the best fighting game ever. NBA2K is a whole level beyond any other sports game. Not too many games have the replay potential of either one of these games. And not one playstation game is nearly as good.

I cannot believe the words that came out of this guys mouth. It is a sad state of affairs when someone who went to college can utter such mindnumbing crap. All books will be online in the future. If the library of congress wanted all books printed now could be online immediately. Presses are computerized so no one even needs to type or scan the books in, they already are available digitized. Only the onlder books will need any effort to be placed online. There is hope since the this crazy librarian will not be the librarian of congress forever. He will have to retire at some point.

  5. The market on Tech Stocks Tumble · · Score: 1

People are making a big deal out of this whole mess but it is nowhere near as bad as '29 or '87. Someone was ranting about having lost their life savings on LNUX. To them all i have to say is that if they are that bad at picking stocks they should invest in mutual funds and let a profesional do the work. While it is true that LNUX opened at a price that was beyond any rational valuation this is their fault for becoming such mad speculators. People became so afraid of missing out on the next big thing that they forgot about being afraid of being in on the next big bust. How can one honestly give RHAT or LNUX a bigger market cap than AAPL? For a while RHAT was worth a few billion dollars more than AAPL. that was ridiculous. A correction was going to come and it wasnt going to be Apple stock going up so it had to be RHAT and LNUX stock coming down to reasonable levels. All slashdot prejudice removed Apple is a much more succesfull company ( in finantial terms) than any Linux company is right now. It has solid growth and earnings instead of a solidly growing loss. Also no one who knows what they are doing will invest their whole life savings on just one company and noe one who knows whatthey are doing will say that they lost their life savings on a company that has barely been out a year. If you still trust that Linux is what the wold will use five years from now that you will make more money sticking to the stock you bought. If LNUX is ever worth half of what MSFT is worth now (even after their drop these past two weeks) you will more than make your money back. Linux stocks fell because there was nowhere else they could go but down. As for MSFT im glad it fell. It might still have a little bit more to give until the punishments are given. They are an evil company that has abused their power in any way they can (most companies would do the same thing if they were in their position but that does not excuse the behaviour). I once held MSFT stock but one day i was listening to the news and the judge came out with the findings of fact against MSFT. I was happy that it had happened but then i realized "hey im an owner of this company this hurts me! and yet i am happy that they got screwed" and i said to myself how can i own part of a company that i want to see bust? I sold all the stock immediately. The market will probably not fall much farther. Im pretty sure that a ground will found this week. Maybe now some slow but real growth will begin and a stable healthy market will commence. If this happens people who lost a lot of money will see it back in a one or two years. There is a chance that we didnt learn anything and that the crazy valuations will return. Then they will see their money comback in a few months. my advice would be to sell the overvaluated stocks and put their money in real companies with real income and revenues. afterall somone who is investing their life's savings shouldnt take big risks.

  6. anonimity on Showdown With The Pinkertons · · Score: 1

I hate this stuid anonimity bullshit. people should own their statements especially when they are accusing someone. it is a basic right to defend oneself and to do that one needs to know who is accusing you and what one is being accused off. one of the only times when such behavious was allowed (to accuse someone and not have them know in who accuser or what the accusation is) was during the stalinist dictatiorship of Russian (read Darkness at Noon), another time was during the Inquisition. If people want safe schools and whatnot make guns illegal. it is as simple as that. Sure people who are completely deluded about the language of the amendments to the constitution of the US pretend that citizens have the right to own guns. Even if that was the intention of the framers of the constitution who fucking cares they can be and have been wrong about things in the past. the retarded worship of the forefathers needs to stop they are not gods after all they allowed slavery and believed wholeheartedly that blacks were inferior to them just because of their skin color. information needs to be free but the only way it is free information is if it has a background information needs context for it to be useful otherwise it is worthless. Who made a statement gives the information some of its proper context.

I dont know where you got your philosophy training but the Matrix actually deals with many of the same issues that Star Trek deals with. In fact I would go so far as to say that it deals, in two hours, with more issues of real philosophycal depth than the entire first series of star trek. Dont get me wrong I love star trek as much as the next geek but too many people on slashdot who have never had any philosophy training spew bullshit about philosophy. I know very little about routers and networking so i make no comments on the subject yet people feel free to make asinine comments on a subject which they are practically illiterate on, viz. philosophy. The matrix is a work that explores almost all of the questions inherent in buddhist philosophy (object-subject split, duality versus oneness, nirvana samsara being the same or not. being not-being and nonbeing the list is very very long if you actually pay attention to the movie's depth) In fact it is the story of a boddhisatva. It also raise many of the epistemological problems that Descartes brought into the fold of philosophy. The problem is that people have gotten too caught up int he special effects of the movie and forgot about the plot and the characters. Film makers have to get people to go to the box office and usually it requires a lot of explosions and fights. some people were not able to separate the beauty of the film from its intelectual relevance. People have a prejudice that beauty cannot be deep. people constantly make jokes about pretty people not being smart. Nietzsche would say that this is simply resentiment. I do not have this prejudice and thus will not deny the plastic beauty of most of the fight scenes in the movie but the movie is much deeper than its flashy surface wich in and of itself is a work of art. Part of the beauty of the matrix is not however the imagery but the architecture that is formed by the ideas it presents to those who pay attention. Kant wrote horrible prose but if someone tell you that the ideas in the transcendental asthetic of the CPuR are not beautyfull they are full of shit.

  9. what should be done. on Microsoft Loses · · Score: 1

I've been thinking for along time about what solutions would help the software comunity the most for a long time. I used to want to see microsoft split but this was mostly an emotional response. honestly one thing is the problem and it is the clout created by the windows monopoly. if they didnt control windows the field would be completely leveled. So the solution is simple. make MSFT open source the os to the same degree that linux is open source. They can still "sell" windows but they will have to compete with all the other companies. Like RHAT and LNUX. Everyone would benefit cause the OS would be better and more inovation would occur since competition would drive the market.

Why? It's just a fashion. It's no different to big fashion designers deciding that bell bottoms are in, and other fashion designers designing bell bottoms. Not that you would care or know but fashion designers sue each other all the time when an item in their collection looks too much like the item in someone elses collection. In fact Ralph Lauren was sued by a much smaller company (name of which i can't remember now) and lost. Ralph Lauren had to pay a few hundred thousand dollars to the other company and stop producing the item. One big diference in this suit was that Ralph Lauren did not release their product knowing that the other company had something pretty much exactly like theirs. So just think How much more liable they would have been if they had outright copied the other company.

  12. Re:This seems in their best interest to me on AOL/Time-Warner Opens Cable Network to Other ISPs · · Score: 2

This is a good move for AOL Time Warner for the reasons you propose but i think that the real reasons for the move are two other. One is the basic fact that Time warner only controls about 20% of the cable market whereas AOL + Compuserve are 60% of the ISP market. And since AOL Time Warner has no interest in seeing their ISP share drop they are presuring the other cable companies to do the same. Content is King and for most people AOL is content. so aol "bought" Time Warner to open their lines and thus get all other cable companies to open up their lines. This way they eliminate the largest threat so far to their ISP dominance. The fact that AOL Also happened to get some content in the deal is a happy accident but not the main goal of their purchase. The second reson for openig the lines to other ISPs is about the cable dsl contest. Usually in each movement in technology many different ones appear as the next step but after a while eveyone standarizes on one particular technology. AOL by opening their cable lines to other ISPs is letting other do some of the work in getting people to sign up for cable instead of dsl. Some people will never in a million years have an aol account however they might consider having an account with an isp that uses aol's cabble lines. This is just an example of the many ways having the open lines will benefit aol time warner in the dsl cabble contest.
