  2. Advice from a cripple. on What Do You Do To Relieve Lower Back Pain? · · Score: 1
Mild stretching/exercise (as recommended by a physical therapist would be best), then pain management, then other things.

First I detached a ligament, because I had been sitting for 16 hours a day and my back was tight. I continued to live my life but since the ligaments were detached, all the pressure was on one side of my disks and two of them ruptured. Then I had those chiselled out and replaced with giant titanium screws. And I am screwed. I am in more pain now than when I had two ruptured discs. As a result, I have had a lot of time and done a ton of research into back pain.

Have hope, 99% of people with back pain will get better no matter what treatment they do or don't do. This is why there are rational people convinced they were cured by everything from homeopathy to psychic healers. The only treatment that statistically reduces the length of time that you will be in back pain is physical therapy, it is a very small statistical improvement. Mild stretching and exercise are good. Everyone knows this. Do it. I would recommend going to a physical therapist and working together to design a stretching/exercise program.

That said, there are things that doctors can do to help. If you are having muscle spasms, a muscle relaxant will help. Ibuprofen can reduce swelling. I would not recommend trying anything more serious until you have tried exercise and stretching for a long time and it has not worked. I would then recommend a pain management program before doing anything but the most minor procedures. Surgery is a last resort. Many people have good results from surgery. What the surgeons don't tell you is that some people end up way worse from surgery, way worse. I did not believe there could be more pain than having two ruptured disks, I have since learned I was wrong. And I did go to the very best surgeons.

  6. MS has certailnly hurt consumers on Second Thoughts: Microsoft on Trial · · Score: 2
The unfair use of Microsoft's monopoly to extend into other markets has hurt consumers. Whether these examples are illegal I will leave for those more qualified to decide.

Hardware companies could not sell DR DOS and MS DOS because MS would not allow it.

Stacker won their lawsuit over having their compression algorithm stolen. They had been basically out of business for a couple of years by the time they got this couple hundred million. A small cost for MS wipe out a competitor.(Okay, so disk compression is irrelevant, MS didn't know that when they wiped stacker out.)

Borland made the best compilers but every time MS upgraded DOS, and later Windows, there was a six month delay for Borland to rewrite their compiler because they didn't have access to the OS as early as the MS compiler teams did. This is a pattern with all software MS makes. Remember Word Perfect? Lotus?

Apple could turn itself into a competing OS except MS would pull its Office software. Windows would not exist if Apple was not forced to sign over some OS patents with the same threat.

All of these competitors are gone or minor now. It is impossible to say what any of these companies would have done if they were competing on a level field but their existence alone would give everyone more choices which would mean everyone would find a choice closer to exactly what they want. This is the harm MS has done to consumers

Mr. Allchin's arguments are specious but that is not important. Bloomberg News didn't seek a single quote from someone in the Open Source community. Good objective American journalism. The American way is that if something is repeated by enough newspapers it becomes the truth. Bill Gates started his business career by ending free software. He honestly believes that without monetary incentives there will be less innovation. This will be repeated again and again. Of those who do most only look at the channel bandwidth or maybe the RPMs. You won't find seek times or other specs in most retail stores. Until people realize that the HD can be the bottleneck in many situations SCSI will be relegated to a few niches.

Many people who would presently benefit from a SCSI drive do not have one. If more of them did, SCSI prices would come down and they would make financial sense for even more people. This will never happen unless there is a widely accepted, easy to understand, single benchmark number. This number would have to encompass all the different specs. that effect HD speed in a weighted average for some broad range of uses.

Whatever weighted average was chosen it would obviously not be true for all situations. It would be better than bandwidth and RPMs or nothing as most people use today. The full specs would still be there for those of us who care. The next step would be to get all the manufacturers to use this benchmark. This should be as easy as getting a peace settlement in the Middle East.
