Ubuntu 9.10 will start sandboxing desktop programs (starts with xpdf i think), other distros do already/will follow. I think that sandboxing can (and if required will) criple malwares abilities (e.g can't listen on network ports, can't insert itself to bootsequence, can't touch chrome tabs that are connected to https sites) leaving them unable to do most malwarey things without permission and can work like an AV that is designed right (e.g warn users that they are about to do something very stupid, only when they are not everytime they run a 3rd party app/widget, without having to scan binaries)

    or take the word back,

the first political activists to adopt the term libertarian in the mid-19th century—are usually anarchists or left communists, opposed to arbitrary structures of authority and hierarchy in personal relations and the larger social order. Most notably they are opposed to state power and forms of private property such as capital, but also oppose patriarchy and racism. These libertarians often believe in the abolition of private property and may be called non-propertarian or anti-propertarian. They do not seek state solutions, instead looking to voluntary and popularly controlled associations.

Ok so that's not really what GP belives, but why should he go looking for a new word, when they "stole" it in the first place.

Moving chips on the motherboard takes substantially longer than sticking a CD in the computer and running a script. The fastest attack i can think of is
    1) boot alternate media and get mobo details (2 min attack)
    2) clone mobo details
    3) replace entire mobo (15min?)
    4) ???
    5) profit

All of which ignores a hw based keylogger, which has always meant physical security was #1, the point of these attacks is to make the attacks easier. A well designed system will reduce the size of the object which must be physically secured, for example a conversation with a memory pen, before the memory pen releases the HDD key, reduces what you need to secure at all times to just the USB key (and even temporary loss of the USB key is hard to exploit in a well designed system), such a system can even protect against HW attacks in the pc, It is much more practical to expect people to secure their USB keys like usual keys than to keep a laptop on them at all.

*Kubuntu does not use pulseaudio by default (well didn't last time i used it, but I'm actually starting to like PA)
*Default apparmor profile, does not step on your toes (with Fedora 11 I ran into problems with selinux blocking me from sharing my files that meant i had to configure selinux, with ubuntu's default apparmor profile i never had to touch it)
*Ubuntu installs are much more stable (as in no new packages) than my fedora install (with updates enabled)
*There are a lot of user maintained hosted by canonical (PPAs), I haven't seen anything similar for fedora (I haven't used them on ubuntu so they may suck)
*Apparently ubuntu 9.10 is moving to grub2
*some software that is avalible in ubuntu is not in fedora (and visa-versa)

Amarok's ui (back in 1.4 and once I set up my 2.x), is 2 frames you drag music from your collection to the playlist, it's easier IMO than iTunes (which is pretty much cloned by songbird and rhythmbox (you lose the iTunes store but gain not running network deamons just to listen to your music))

What features of iTunes do you like? If its shitty program that installs network demons just to play your media then perhaps you should get your head checked there is:
amarok (1.4 was a very good playlist based player, 2.x is getting there)
    rhythmbox (gnome based)
mpd based players (work on windows)
I suppose windows options are limited as WMP/winamp/foobar are different kinds of players, but there must be something other than songbird

If its the iPod/Phone syncing related features, then i dont think anything but iTunes will ever compete
If its the music store integration then TFA is too sparse on details to tell. Assuming that google audio 1) exists (i mean this is techcrunch), 2) is a music download service, then hopefully they will collaborate with all mediaplayers to add support like mangatunes in amarok. For bonus points they should allow redownloads (within reason) and let you choose the format (some of us really do prefer ogg, hell somebody must be insane enough to like wma)

And the 2D drivers are faster

The reality is that for everyday use*, ATI cards now work out of the box on linux with rock solid stability this is not the case for nvidia, and it's just a matter of time till the 3D support catches up with nvidia's and firmly place ATI cards as #1 choice for Linux users (if its not already)
