  2. Something is wrong here. on Dynamic Cross-Processor Binary Translation · · Score: 1
If what they're doing is transforming lower level instructions back to higher level ones and then recompiling them into another arch with better optimizations, then something is very wrong.

First, they should be using the actual higher level code in the first place since trying to guess what the program is supposed to be doing by looking at the optimized assembly output of a compiler is *ugly* at best.

And even if they can do this, the speedups obtained can only mean that the compiler used for the initial binary version of the program was sub-optimal and should be developed.

So forget trying to turn x86 assembly into whatever-assembly since that's just plain stupid and invest money in compiler optimization.

And if what they say is true, and this is not for the end user but the software house to use and develop, why would someone who has the actual sourcecode for the program spend time porting it to another platform by binary translation? They'd be better off writing some essential routine in assembly for the speedups needed.

What is really needed is an agreed form of bytecode (java???) and good VM's designed for the architecture by the people making it in the first place. If the next athlon/pentium/ppc had being good at JAVA (or whatever VM is best) in mind, then maybe actual full applications could be written for it.

This kind of mentality is not really new anyway. The cold war was all about that really. Communism's vision of a classless society against capitalism's free market.

Most music you download on Napster is ilegal so the RIAA has all the rights to pursue legal action. The real question here is who is at fault. Napster should NOT be responsible for what it's users share in it's system. It's the same thing as sueing Apache because people are using it to distribute mp3s. That's the only defence Napster has and in a country with a fair legal system it would suffice.
