Now you're just being silly! Why should any organisation support this bigotry? Do you allow everybody to say anything they like when they're in your home? I can think of things being said that would lead to me throwing someone out. I don't know what Apple's motivation was for taking down this app. I tried to do my small part for that by signing a petition. Also, it is pretty clear that this message can seriously hurt some young gay people! Assuming you're straight, like I am, how would you like a message from society that that way you are naturally is wrong and you need to change even though that's pretty much impossible? And then considering that gays are a small minority and that there is still a lot of intolerance from assholes towards them almost everywhere in American society, I don't think you realise what kind of emotional damage this might do. The mere existence/availability of such an app can also lead to parents or other authority figures in a gay persons life to be mislead and to put pressure on a young gay person to "change". And yes, I don't think that all speech is created equal. That is why in many modern Western democracies, including my own country, racist messages, for example, are not part of protected speech. And I for my part support that! Of course you also have limitations on your free speech. I don't think you can call openly for the assassination of your president, for example. You probably also cannot call for the violent overthrow of your government etc. There is no unrestricted free speech in any democracy on this planet. Of course I acknowledge that that in itself is not necessarily an argument for or against. That really depends on your philosophy.

Geeks are a small subset in general so you would be hard pressed to notice that subset. I work at a university and here there are tons of geeks, including computer geeks that seem to prefer Apple hardware. Of course I have no actual statistics. Still, I wonder what other laptops, for example, that have excellent support for all the hardware, very good build quality and fantastic battery life running some kind of UNIX-like operating system are out there? As far as "typical" Apple buyers, I'd imagine that they are not poor people. Actually, I have never been in an Apple store. I always buy online. I am a bit antisocial and also prefer hanging out with "my kind", in other words, other geeks.

Apple buyers are normally not geeks.

You sir, are entirely wrong! Of our 4 software developers here, 3 are Apple buyers. I'd like to point out that we develop a Java application that needs to run on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS and we all have the choice of what we pick and even at work, 3 of us picked Apple computers. I have plenty of geek creds myself, with a Ph.D. in physics, being a computer programmer, avid comic book collector etc. I love Linux but still prefer a MacBook Pro because I think of it as the highest quality laptop running UNIX. I am primarily a command-line user and I support a couple of dozen Ubuntu users on the side. Most of our graduate students here have Apple laptops and these are people in bioinformatics, hardly what I wouldn't call geeks. OTOH, I would never touch anything from Microsoft. I always say "I will use any OS as long as it is UNIX!". I am not opposed to Android and wish it the best of luck and am quite open to try it at some time in the future. When Honeycomb or one of its successors is as stable and performant as iOS and when there is a similarly priced Android tablet with the same of better quality build and screen as the then current iPad, I would be happy to give it a try. It is just my subjective perception that this is not the case as of yet. My biggest gripe with the iPad is the lack of an SD card slot. A command-line prompt would be nice to play around with but is really not all that useful. I am also baffled why apps for Android are being developed with Java instead of a natively compiled language like C++ (I know there is a much smaller pool of competent C++ programmers than Java programmers etc.) when we're already dealing with with a low processing-power platform. I guess I am still hoping for a decent Ubuntu tablet environment, fully realising that this is probably a pipe dream. I wouldn't even have a tablet if I didn't spend 1.5 hours a day on a bus. But for riding a bus a tablet computer is about 100x more useful than a laptop!

Which app store has a history of having apps that take over your device for nefarious purposes? Which OS, has reviewers all over the place mentioning lots of crashes? I give you a hint: it's Honeycomb and not iOS! If it's so easy to backup Android, why do people need to buy separate apps like Titanium Backup?

So, having a huge selection of app, avoiding viruses and stability problems and having a really easy way to back up data for all apps is not a good reason to, for example, choose an iPad over an Android tablet? I'd call that quite "effective"! Somehow I don't think you really thought this through, did you now?

No need to feel sorry for me. Living closer would have meant spending at least another $100k on a condo. Also, I am in walking distance of a Trader Joe's, a comic book store and a vet, all very important to me. As I am a pretty hardcore environmentalist, I decided early on not to drive. This means that I choose the location of my home very carefully. I am on a direct bus route to my workplace (UCSD) and my work is my last stop. Not having a car also saves me so much money that I have calculated that I can retire at least 2 years earlier to Hawaii (my favourite state) than other people with the same income and similar aspirations. I should add that I require a fairly large place because I have a huge comic book collection (~40,000 comics) and I use 2 bedrooms just for my collection. I also have 2000 science fiction novels, and 3000 DVDs and blu-ray discs. So living very close to UCSD would be extremely expensive given that I need a 3-bedroom place. Yes, I am not your average geek. Of course I also have a few hundred computer, physics and math books that, for sentimental reasons, I won't part with. I guess I am just the worst kind of packrat but at least my stuff is well organised.

I spend 1 1/2 hours a day on the bus and that's why I love my iPad. I also really enjoy it the few times a year that I have to fly. If I didn't have those use cases
, I probably wouldn't own one but I love using it and it can by no means be replaced by a laptop. I have carried a backpack with me for most of my life and now I have my 3G iPad in it all the time and that is way better than lugging my heavy laptop with me instead which I also didn't do before there even was an iPad. And I am saying this as a UNIX bigot. I am probably one of the 10 people that use an Apple laptop because it runs UNIX really well and that uses the command-line far more than the GUI while at work. But, the iPad and a laptop running UNIX are two very different things and neither can replace the other for every use case!

Hopefully the iPad 2 will be a tad lighter, but, that may just be the trade off for the awesome battery life. Before I had my iPad, I used to use my iPod Touch a lot more, including for watching videos on planes. Now I would be happy with a much higher capacity digital music player with far less functionality. I should also add that I have always been carrying my backpack with me wherever I go. Since I am already 51, I doubt that's going to change soon. I suppose that's another factor why I don't mind the sizeof the iPad. Before I had it, I always wanted an iPod Touch with a 4" screen. That would still be nice! I don't have a cell phone or even a landline. I do use Skype and pay a small monthly amount for my own phone number. I just think that phone service is a huge ripoff in the U.S. I think laws are needed to force companies to just compete on service and cost of bandwidth and/or data. That would really benefit consumers! But I'm not holding my breath for that to happen in a country where it is legal to bribe politicians! In my country of origin, companies can give money to political parties but not to the campaigns of individuals. The party then decides which of their candidates gets any money and how much. I am sure it is far more difficult to influence an entire party that way than it is to influence a single individual. To me the way campaign finance works is the biggest flaw in the U.S. political system and I believe it is responsible for the high cost of bandwidth and phone service for example.

I spend about 10% of the time playing a game on it, 30% browsing the Internet and 60% reading. Not once have I seen anyone holding up a netbook to their face to read. In fact while I have seen other people use tablet devices I have *never* seen anyone use a netbook on the bus. I just can't imagine a netbook being remotely as convenient for browsing nor for reading as a tablet computer. Apart from my bus rides I also really enjoy using my iPad whenever I have to fly somewhere. Yes, I also take a very nice MacBook Pro with me when I travel but I don't pull it out to watch movies on while on the plane. And no, a device with a much smaller screen like an smartphone or digital music player does not give you remotely the same quality experience. Believe me, I have used them for several years before I got my iPad last April. So, in summary, for what I use it for, the iPad is much more useful than a netbook! In fact, I use it so much that I plan on getting either the iPad2 or a Honeycomb tablet sometime this year. The only thing I miss on my iPad is an SD card slot because that way I could carry even more immediately accessible videos with me when I travel.

Evolution can be seen for example in the DNA of all living things. It can be simulated on a computert. Observed in bacteria in almost real time and traced in the fossil record.
