Technically speaking, you're in debt pretty major with a mortgage payment... so it's a great deal like a budget deficit works.
You couldn't pay for your whole house so you got a mortgage..
The govt can't pay for everything it does so it releases t-bonds/t-bills/etc... mortgaging the country, in essence... and paying the intrest (most often) to big banks that buy them (or your grandmother who got them for you when you were born):)
is deaf... She was also one of the first people to receive what began the modern form of cochlear implants.
She's had the implant since she was very young. As you can imagine, the technology in a little box almost 20 years old is a little aged. Also, we've run into frequent problems with her current system, mostly involving the durability of the devices she has to wear. And they're not cheap either... just thank god my insurance covers most of it.
About 2 years ago we began the process of getting her a new implant. My insurance company agreed that it was in everyones best interest to do so. We began research on all the different options (4). In the end, we chose the Nucleus device, if only for the fact that it came from a company with which we were greatly familiar.
Now, in doing our research we didn't really find any evidence to push us in one direction or the other... in the end it was a matter of preference for what types of features you want...
Of course, the very major downside to getting a new system installed (including the parts inside the ear and head), is that you have to completely relearn sounds. You see, it's not like what we hear... and different programs and hardware cause sounds to be different... so while I may sound fine now, like her husband... with the new system i may sound like some french speaking alien with a sore throat.
In the end, we ended up not upgrading, because of some other wonderful news... the wife was pregnant with twins.... and surgery is not an option at this point. Maybe once the kids are all grown up we'll go back down this path again...
And hopefully the technology will be far beyond where it is today.
1. Don't be to quick to judge others hatreds as irrational.
2. And contrary to popular belief, we don't live in a democracy. We live in a Republic (yes, big R). To be more specific a representative republic.
Infact... our founding fathers feared a democracy, as do I. Because it is the idea of democracy that leads to the destruction of rights we hold dear, to accommodate the laziness of others.
To quote James Madison: ".. democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths."
If we were truly a democracy, Lincoln could never have freed the slaves. The right to certain forms of speech would be banned... remember they tried to stop Twisted Sister and then 2 Live Crew; and just think how harmless they seem today; there will always be something. The right to bear arms (no wait, we're already losing that one too). And without going down the entire list of the first 10 in the bill of rights, I could just say that if we had been a democracy through all of this, that none of it [Bill of Rights] would apply today.
Democracy is mob rule... I believe our military used to train solders that democracy was mobocracy. And the problem with politics today is that everyone tries to meet some common ground, to compromise their beliefs for the vote or for the satisfaction of the majority. Compromise is weakness. The problem with voters is that we no longer vote for the person we feel most confident to make decisions for our sake, we instead vote for the person who tells us what we want. A Senator or Representative is not in Washington to act as a proxy for democracy, and when tough decisions arise in which they know in their minds or their hearts they are making the right decision, they should never bow down to the will of their constituents.... I feel like I need to say: and in conclusion, remember that compromise is a sign of weakness and democracy leads to communism, which leads to red things, which don't really go with my skin, so lets avoid that if we can.
I like do drive fast, very very fast. I speed all the time. I accelerate as fast as possible. I own a fast car. I do not care that I get only 17mpg. I would pay $10/gal and not complain.
INFACT... I would like gasoline prices to finally get to $10, so all of these minivan and SUV driving soccer moms would get off the f*king road.
Yes, I have hit the electronic speed limiter on my car numerous times; yes I know it's illegal (and punishable by jail time and loss of driving privelages)... but I FUCKING LOVE IT.
Those of you who gasp at the scientific impossiblities are the same ones who think that the "Star Wars" trillogy was a profound set of workmanship. It's a movie, not a life changing event. It's a story, much like "Star Wars", meant to make us wonder what our origins may have been, or why there was a sudden explosion of life several hundred million years ago. I often go to movies just for the pretty colours. I enjoy science-fiction... and that's exactly what this was.... (and I don't think they'd deny it)...
Movies were meant for entertainment. If you want an educational experience, pick up an encyclopedia. If you go to a movie for anything but ENTERTAINMENT, you're wasting your time. You're just like those guys who buy their Italian Sport-Race cars, and then leave them in their garages for the entire year (minus one friday night).
Maybe, just maybe, I'm wrong here, and what you call "Hollywood" is not in the entertainment business. E! is no longer Entertainment News... it's Educational [movie] News. They're renaming Entertainment tonight... it's now "How the laws of physics are being portrayed in movies, and how it harms our children".
I like the movie quite a bit. I was GREATLY entertained. I got to see it on one of the extremely rare digital projection cinemas... now, it's time they bring the Matrix back out, just for this theater.

Anyone else out there experience the slowness of DateManip? The company I currently work for used to use DateManip heavily (in mod_perl even), and it slowed things down by 1/2sec per request... we converted all the DateManip stuff over to strftime and localtime... worked MUCH MUCH better for us. Along with not having to install and keep updates on a module, and not loading it into memory, this is a great benefit...
This is all from my experience, and just a recommendation on a minor change which could be made...
I can't imagine why a company would want to limit itself to Linux. This is not to say that Linux is a bad OS...
Limiting yourself to one OS seems almost hyppocritical. Throughout history OSes have fallen, others have rise, and still some linger in the background. By limiting yourselves to only one OS, you're doing the exact same thing you hated the big boys for doing... (only carrying microsoft). I love the idea of providing a higher level of support, and think that it will be the one clear advantage that VA Linux will have... but this advantage is no good without some sort of flexibility. For all we know, what is OS X today could become the next major OS, running on all types of machines, while OpenBSD may be preferred by customers looking for the highest level of security and cryptography.
Naming a company VA Linux is like Dell calling themselves Dell Windows... it's silly and limits your scope of sales.
Government legislation, bills being prepared, what congress has to say every day... I used to be a HUGE CSPAN freak (still would be if I didn't have to work all day)... If you saw the democrats in action... you'd want to kill. There's nothing quite like a hypocritical group of communists. (If communism and/or socialism works, why then is the USA the most powerful nation both financially and influentially)
Maybe it's just me, but if they're going to connect several of the largest machines together on this network to help calculate for the Genome project... maybe they should write a piece of distributed computing software to get the entire world involved. Follow in the footsteps of SETI.
Imagine using even 1% of the world's computing power. You'd have most of the genome project finished before the end of next year.
If anyone knows who to contact.... I'm more than willing to give them a call.
I thought the idea of bashing the fact that nobody ever gets the facts right when they bash linux or IPOs was funny, but I dislike the fact that it tries to portray linux as the supreme OS.
I've noticed in my years of following stories on OSs and the comments posted about them, that the Linux crowd (and I know this it's the minority causing the majority to appear as such) is more voracious and illogical in their arguments whenever someone takes to bashing their OS (or kernel). I've written a few articles which bashed the reliability of NT compared to other more stable OSs like Solaris, FreeBSD, and BSDi. Only about 1% of the responants made a personal attack on me. Admitedly many of them lacked a good argument in their replies, but they did argue without namecalling and without mailbombing. So, one day I decided I'd write an article about how Linux is a stepping stone to more stable OSs (YES, Linux is not nearly as stable as Solaris, HP-UX, or most others). I realized later this was one of the biggest mistakes I could have possibly made. About 10% of the replies I received were personal attacks.
So this article does make a good point that most poeple would fear writing an anti-Linux article because of the evilness perpetuated by the users.
I will admit that the vast majority of Linux users are fairly well behaved and have good arguments as to why their OS/kernel is better. Most of the time they're right, but when someone finds that little part of Linux where some other non-Unix-like OS beats the living shit out of it, all of the violent majority pop their heads up and destroy what should be a very peaceful society.
Open Source is much like communism... Everyone contributes for the good of the whole. It makes sense. I'm not a big fan of communism in government, but I think it's perfect for technology.
So instead of being MS-hating people, maybe it would be good for us, as a group of users, to stop attacking those who are pro-MS and start using our time to make something better, in the spirit of communism.
