  1. Re:Doesn't the EU have maximum volume regs? on Is the iPod Generation Going Deaf? · · Score: 1

I found a nice article that discusses the EU and OSHA regulations, as well as other useful information such as the decibel levels of common sounds.

    The OSHA regulations in summary:
    90 dbA 8 hrs
    92 dbA 6 hrs
    95 dbA 4 hrs
    97 dbA 3 hrs
    100 dbA 2 hrs
    102 dbA 1.5 hrs
    105 dbA 1 hr
    110 dbA 0.5 hr
115 dbA 0.25 hr or less

They also refer to a study that looked at people's headphone settings in different environments. The study found that in a quiet room listeners set headphones volumes at an average of 69 dB. On a noisy street the average was 80 dB. In other words, for most people - this isn't anything to worry about even if you have a long daily commute. Just keep the volume level down.

  2. BBS User Browsers on The "Find Your Old BBS Buddies" Database · · Score: 1

I use ISCA BBS (one of the oldest, largest telnet BBSs out there), and came across a great user browser called ISCA Big Brother (http://orangejumpsuit.dynu.com/bbsusers), that tracks BBSers login habits. I wonder what other BBSs out there have similar tools available? Searching through user profiles for their home pages can provide countless hours of entertainment.

  3. has anyone else noticed.... on Real-time Video Disinformation · · Score: 1

People are marveled this technology, advertisers love it and free-thinkers worry about the possibility of changing history or even live video broadcasts. Nobody else seems to have raised the point that this technology produces video that is pretty much always NOTICEABLY FAKE. You can be wowed by J.F.K appearing in Forrest Gump, or yellow lines across the football field, or John Wayne peddling beer...but all of this looks fake as hell. Yes, the technology will get better but this isn't anything new. Technology has existed to edit still photos for decades, and it has become very sophisticated. But bad fakes are easily spotted, and experts can spot even the best fakes. Experts won't always be able to analyze live video as it's being broadcast on CNN, but that'll force journalists to do something that they've almost forgotten how to do: check their facts.

  4. Re:Netscape 6- First Looks on Netscape 6 Preview Release · · Score: 3
There are some features missing from the Netscape 6/Mozilla toolbar that I really miss:
    • The back button no longer functions as a history dropdown. This is a very convenient feature, and downright necessary when the previous page has a redirect to the current page.
    • A home button. I'm definitely not the first to comment about this.
    • The url window no longer has a history dropdown. This was also very handy.
Aside from that, I can only pray that the speed improves in the final release. If not the question will shift from "Will Netscape make up the lost ground?" to "Will Netscape survive?"
