We are still doing things. Quite a bit of things. The only difference is we don't really need human beings up there to do these tasks, thus you don't hear about the missions and discoveries. It's not big news unless a human is physically involved, generally.
Did anyone else think that maybe instead of everyone else in the world being underpaid... perhaps we are overpaid? If we don't adjust to this, either through new skills/technologies or lowering wages, expect to see more jobs going out of this country.
Resources are scarce...
This probably happens a good amount of time. Otherwise they would most likely take this singular loss to maintain their reputation. No big deal really (How is this news).
