  1. Re:Somehow... on Vista Service Pack One Almost Here · · Score: 4, Insightful

Random stuff does not break. Look at the emergency patching and releasing of the kernel that all distros had to go through a while back to fix the VM splice bug.

All those distros managed to push a replacement kernel in a matter of hours/days that did not adversely affect user systems that I could tell.

Likewise, this patch of an operating system that you pay for ought to work as smoothly as the free one. I'm not really sure how comparable the two are, but it is interesting that the linux distros were able to pull a hot fix like that without too much user consternation.

Are you sure you are taking the right test? I'm using Firefox 3 Beta 3 on Gentoo linux (x86) and it works here. Go to http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html and try again. I do recall that the main site for the test has a broken link, resulting in it appearing to fail on all browsers.

  4. Activities - more IE only "standards"? on Internet Explorer 8 Beta Features Revealed · · Score: 2, Informative

Looking at the developer guide, I noticed that the activities require the website designer to program this IE only feature into their sites. As it is XML, I suppose it would be fairly easy for others to catch up, but this does sound like something developers will have to do just for IE... unless I'm looking at this one wrong. Anyone care to clarify?

  6. Re:It's the friggin on/off-ramp idiots... on Experiment Shows Traffic 'Shock Waves' Cause Jams · · Score: 2, Insightful

Depends on the design of the on and off ramps. Those off ramps that force you to slow down to 40km/h (25mph) about 15 meters after the off ramp stops... practically forcing you to slow beforehand. :(

Oh, and some locations have the cute idea to have an offramp and an on ramp in the same location, using the same stretch of road. Meaning you get on the freeway, and if you continue going straight you end up going off the freeway. This results in traffic trying to get on the road having to work around traffic trying to work around those that want on the road.

    Design roads better!

The obvious way to reduce the probability would be to do a 4x4 selection instead, or if that seems too much for users, have them select the right image out of a field of 9 possible choices. Then you get something like 3 rows of 6 or 9 images. The only drawback is too much work on the user's end. :S

Interesting logic, by that... I suppose we should all exchange Microsoft word files because 99% of people use it. (Yes its a stat pulled out of my nether area, but so is the statistic you quoted). I'm just saying that 1) I was unable to get at the site, and 2) I think its bad design to force flash, its not that hard to do an alternate site. This whole flash thing reminds me of the Internet Explorer only websites.

Lets take your Braille example, there are very few texts if any at all that are Braille only, I can usually find an alternate text that is in printed english. This is similar to what I'm asking for.

All in all, if its just a directory of flash sites, then I suppose it means nothing if I can see the directory anyway, I just found it odd to call a site that is in accessible to screen readers or text only browsers good design. I do appreciate the other links you left though, thanks! :)

PS: If flash can be read through a screen reader I'd love to know

  9. Requring flash is not good design on Web Graphic Design for Small Businesses · · Score: 1

Looking at one of your suggested sites, http://www.thefwa.com/ requires flash 7 or higher. If the site lists good design, and you are not suggesting it in itself is good design, your list is somewhat better. However it is a bad sign when you can't view a site's main page because you don't have a proprietary plugin.
