"if you have nothing to hide, then what is the problem?"
I seriously hope you're joking... there's not enough *facepalms* in the world that can express my true reaction to that statement, if made in all seriousness.
Whether this couple cares, there is great evidence that the driver in that area may have just gone onto private property at their neighbors' house. See yesterday's article and discussion.
Funny thing is, I haven't touched a mac in I'd bet 13 years or more, so I laugh at the frantic Mac apologists remark.
I can handle the truth in your last statement. I personally believe (read: know) that no system will be 100% secure. I mention this in contrary to the fanboys who are blinded too much to see that it's the user, not the system, that needs work.
But the exploit could be easily adapted to other Operating Systems (no link to corroborate that, just what I recall reading last week) meaning that it's a combination of browser insecurity and user ignorance that toppled the Macbook Air in this case.
I'm sure someone beat me to this here: 2 minutes into the second day, only after user-input was allowed. The first day was only over-the-network attacks, which all three systems failed.
The same exploit can be made to work on any system (it was a Safari exploit) and the Air's desirability as a prize may have influenced its being targeted.
No, the compromise came in Safari, not OSX, and the Macbook Air made for a sexy prize to target.
As far as firewalls/AV goes... I know better than to, but I don't run either. I trust on my safe surfing skills, but that's like wearing a bullet proof glove: the rest of me is still vulnerable.
Good idea on running a live CD for security... I'll keep that in mind.
... and that's what gets to me. Ignorance of the unwashed masses. I'm 24. I only voted for a president once (and you can be damn sure it wasn't Bush), but it hasn't been until the past 3-5 months that I've become enlightened, and what I've been shown, the things I've been a sheep to before then, these things enrage me now.
As someone below stated, an actual raid would be hard (LF39M White House! Need healz, tanks, DoT!) but it should start with a major revolution in our education. I'm not talking about k-12 here, I mean everyone. I feel like such a fool for even being a constituent of this administration, and now that I've become a bit more learned in such things, I am ashamed of my previous self.
Once the vast majority of US residents understand the true vision of the Constitution, we need to hold our elected officials to their sworn duties to uphold and defend it. Right now there's too much money involved with politics. Politicians are more likely to vote to fill their wallets than to hear what their constituents desire. As a challege, I'd like someone to show me one politician that actively and repeatedly listens to their constituents, via email, telephone calls, or town meetings throughout their entire represented districts.
Once we get a majority of trustworthy and honest politicians in the government, then we can have the vision of the Constitution. I don't see that happening anytime soon. I wonder what it will take for people who were apathetic or trusting as I previously was, or those actively calling for war against any and all "terrests" in the middle east (I've even heard people who say "All those -stans out there are all terrorists!" in regards to the countries with "stan" in the name) to open their eyes and become a little bit more independent in their thinking?
I'm sorry, so I get a troll because I oppose the blatant and approved display of what is damn-near a browser hijack link? There goes what little interest I had in the popularity contest that is these Scores... I could understand an "Off-Topic" score...
As a caveat before the black helicopters start circling me: I'm not advocating the harm or assassination of anyone in government. I'm advocating the peoples' rights to run their government, and to hold militia against a government that's overstepping their bounds and encroaching (or demolishing) our rights.
So when are we going to stand in arms against our government? Cuz as far as I see it, Chimpy McFlightsuit is nothing more than an uglier Jar Jar Binks mouthpiecing (knowingly or not) for the eventual dissipation of our government and a complete handover of all power to an emperor.
One man aiming a gun to the face of corruption gets arrested. A whole nation doing it gets their way.
I went from administering a community college to an engineering firm's branch office... big difference in user trustworthiness. As it is now, we only make sure that licensing is respected, but users are Power Users and are still pretty wary about their machines, calling me or my supe up before doing anything major.
To not have to hold hands anymore, like the math instructor who didn't know how to copy/paste in Word back at that college... that's a blessing!

Carry on now.
Firewalls can monitor and prevent outgoing traffic, not preventing infection but certainly alerting an observant admin to it.

You obviously aren't from around the States, are you?

Doesn't moderation mean more than silly numbers? Someone should delete this thread... Wow even Fark is better than this.
