  1. Re:Smart move on Microsoft Unveils 'Urge' Music Service · · Score: 1

I prefer to think of it as "Netflix for music" except that you can keep your tracks as long as you want, as many as you want. I am also a Yahoo Unlimited subscriber. If like an album enough, I'll go out and buy the CD.

I can't think of a more economical way to try out new music. And by try out I don't mean a one-shot listen at the bookstore, or 30 second clips from Amazon.

The "need to own" is a bit fuzzy for me. With Yahoo I have music everywhere I need it - my office at work, my car (portable player that supports the DRM), and at home in multiple rooms via Roku M500s.

No I'm not really pro-DRM, but this to me is minimally invasive. I'm not restricted as to how many tracks I can download, keep at one time, how many times to listen, etc. THAT would be invasive.

Finally, I too would like to have unprotected MP3s or FLACs in whatever format I want. So buy a CD that doesn't have copy proection. Done.

Instead, people should be angry at the RIAA for not giving the money to the artists. That's where the real crime exists.

Yep. X-Sharp. I remember being completely in awe of rotating a polygon (even a few polygons!) in real-time, with lights. My jaw dropped. You can still find X-Sharp articles on the web, they're good reads as he always had a story to tell in relation to the technical details.

Michael Abrash rules. Back in college I did an independent study in 3D graphics programming, and based it on his articles in Dr. Dobbs journal. I even asked him some programming questions, and he was very supportive.

He and companies like id who pioneer the industry, are great influences for the future geek-by-choice.

  6. Nomad Jukebox III on Professional-Grade Audio Recording With A PDA · · Score: 1

I used to record live shows (that meaning, taper-friendly bands) with Minidisc. True that it's portable and convenient. BUT it's compressed, and there is no DIGITAL way to get data back to the computer.

NetMD (Sony) let's you push data from computer to MD, not vice-versa. On a large home deck, you might have optical out. But in most cases, your stuck with sending compressed audio over your analog sound card.

With a Nomad Jukebox III (even the 20GB version) I can record full uncompressed WAV. About 30 hours worth as far as space goes. With an outboard A/D converter, you can even go optical in. Then drag several hours worth of shows over Firewire, in just a few minutes.

  7. "new to Linux" != "new to computing" on Linux Distributions Rated on CNet · · Score: 1

Perhaps I didn't read the article thoroughly,
but it seems that CNET equated being "new to Linux" as being new to COMPUTING.

I was a Linux newbie, and was able to install Debian with reasonable ease.

Prior experience with DOS, Windows whatever, and Netware is what helped. One can know about concepts like networking, partitioning, programs depending on libraries, using a command line, etc - and have never used Linux or any Unix for that matter.

Granted that those that are comfortable with their own abilities might not be swayed by such an article. And the others might need a push in the "easier" direction.

But had I read this article prior to using Debian, I might have been steered in the other direction, and missed out on some learning opportunites.
(distro flame in any direction not intended)
