  1. Boycott? No... but I'm still not buying the VHS. on Rick McCallum Answers "Why No Star Wars DVD?" · · Score: 1

Why? Because I don't buy VHS anything anymore. It's an obsolete, inferior format, and will only become moreso as HDTV brings TV's to a level that takes full advantage of DVD capability. Don't believe me? Watch "The Matrix" on VHS. Then watch it on DVD. The difference is clear. Honestly, I'd rather he release plain-jane DVD's now, and release special ones later. I could live with that, just to have the movie in the superior format. Waiting, though... that hurts. Not so much because of Ep. I... I want Eps. IV-VI! I don't think he's waiting because of money. He could release a plain Star Wars release now and make plenty of money on it, then make more with a special release later. I think the reasons stated here are pretty believable. That doesn't mean I agree with them, though. Guess I'll go spend the money to buy Macross Plus on DVD instead.

I'd love to see it IF people would put down their flamethrowers long enough to ask serious questions. It would be interesting to see his answers to some of the more solid criticisms of Microsoft's products (notably Windows... their other products really aren't half bad for the most part, in my experience).
To be honest, though, I can't see it happen. It's certainly not easy to step up before a group where many of its members look for any chance they can find to demonize you. If he ever were to do an interview here, I'd have a lot of respect for that, and I hope the slashdotters in general would as well.
It's easy to make Bill into a demon dead-set on owning the world--I've done it myself, I admit--but can we actually listen to what the man has to say?

As a tech support type myself, I just wanted to thank you for this post. Too often we get our heads bitten off by customers over things we have no control over. This is the largest part of the reason techs get burned out so fast typically. I'm fortunate in the company that I work for now, our Network Ops group is pretty diligent about getting things taken care of, so I don't hear too much of this, but I've been there with a previous employer, and it is *not* fun. Trust me, the tech on the phone is probably even more frustrated than you are, because they've probably been bugging the responsible parties to get it taken care of, and you're probably not the first person to complain. It takes a lot of patience to be a phone-support tech. Give these people a break... as a general rule, if you treat them well, they'll do whatever they can to help.

If you're working at home because you don't like going in to the office, then that's your choice... your company shouldn't have to be responsible for that... This smacks a little too much of the modern "I'm entitled to this" attitude for my taste.

  5. Greedy? Probably not. on MSFT thanks Linux Programmer for paying $35 Fee · · Score: 2

If I had to guess, I'd bet that the comment about "deserving" more because he did them a favor was probably something just said idly, or even in jest, that the reporter seized on... they do have a tendency to do that in the news, to add a twist to a story. Never say something you don't want quoted in front of a reporter, eh?

Ah, but is even this a bad thing...? So Intel comes to fight. At this point, I don't see them being able to put AMD down... the competition his here to stay. We all know competition is good... maybe now Intel will be forced to show us what they are capable of, instead of painting an extra "I" on the P-II... We shall see, of course... and that's the beauty of Open Source OS's... you can bet that whatever comes out from either side (Itanium? Slegehammer? Something else?) there will be Linux distributions to support it... Stormwalker "He who breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom" --Gandalf the Grey"
