  1. Micro$oft and Auditing software on Can the BSA Investigate Your office for Piracy? · · Score: 1

When I started my new job here at the university where I used to study, one of the managers told me how Micro$oft used to come around on a regular basis (yearly I think) and audit all the software the uni was running at that time...

Seems one day one of the reps came around and saw some burnt CD's of some of the M$ OS's on the managers desk...

The rep doing the audit politely told the guy that he should make those disks as backups, mainly because the uni has a select licence agreement and the disks were still on the university grounds.

I think that since then the manager has done that with all the CD's he copies

  2. Do your work at home on Intellectual Property Issues In College? · · Score: 1

As a recent graduate from a university here in Australia, I had a few long discussions with one of my lecturer concerning a copyright notice that I put into source code that I had developed on my linux machine at home and brought into the uni to compile on the machine that it was going to be tested on.

He was of the opinion that even code I had written at home was the universities intellectual property (the code was for an automated assignment submission program).

I correctly argued that any work I had done on my personal machine was therefore mine and was subject to any copyright rules that I wished to apply to them. I even talked to a lawyer friend of mine regarding this and he backed up my version of it all.

Thinking back, I think that might be the reason that I only got 50% exactly for the unit *8^(

  3. Both Books on Two Books On Programming With PHP · · Score: 1

I have both books, and while I only just got the developing web applications with php 4, I have had the pocket reference for some months now and have used to quite extensively, however while I am using the pocket reference I also tend to use the online doco at the same time for a more indepth usage of the function that I want to use...

I have read the first few chapters of Developing Web Application, and I think that for some software developers these chapters are a must, because most of us tend to forget about the good coding practices that we all learnt back at college or university...

All in all, I would rate the pocket reference as 7.5/10 and the Developing Web Applications book at 8/10 just based on the first few chapters.

    Good references for PHP programmers

  4. A great loss for everyone on Sir Alec Guinness Dies · · Score: 2

Personally, I think that it's a great loss for the world when someone with the acting skills of Sir Alec dies...

Maybe they should take a couple of his cells and clone him... At least we could get a couple more SW movies out of him *8^)

  5. Good, bad or in-different... on Boies: Music Industry Could Lose Copyright · · Score: 1

Australian's love the underdog, and we love to see the little guy making good against the big guys who just want to destroy all the opposition... I understand the RIAA's need to try and protect the profit margin of their members, but can they really say that this is what they are doing when CD sales are actually up? All this suggests to me is someone else trying to control a market to the exclusion of all others... is the RIAA going to go after radio stations next because people can record songs off the radio, and dont have to actually go out and buy the CD... kind of defeats the purpose of the whole deal doesnt it... All I therefore have to say is, Go Napster
