They interviewed this guy on NPR a week or so ago. He's just another sleazy politician. You know, the kind that never give a direct answer to anything.
I wonder if the slowness has anything to do with people running web servers off their cable modems like I see you are doing? Also warez kiddies are a big cause of slowdown on the networks. According to the TOS you are not supposed to use your cable modem as a server.
My complaints with mediaone are somewhat different-- my connection speed has been great -- almost always over 100 kilobytes/sec (and most of this slowness is due to the site on the other end) -- but the reliability is not very good. In June my cable modem was out for an entire week! Also just last weekend the cable was on and off for about 3 days. It is certainly more reliable than my previous dialup accounts though. Besides those two outages I have no other real complaints.
...and it hasn't turned into a Portal Page. THis is great! If they ever add "Get your own email/homepage @google.com" I'm not going to use them anymore though:)
I agree! That portal stuff is obnoxious and pathetic.
Question: How do they plan to make money off this site? It is venture-capital funded right?
An old 386 on an AOL modem dialup should be sufficient. Make sure your copy of Windows NT has the latest service pack installed. Write your dynamic content in a lightweight language like Visual Basic or GW-BASIC.
What exact words come up when you telnet to the machine? We can determine if you are just hitting a router or proxy server or something of that sort by the telnet banner. If it says "User Access Verification" followed by "Password:" it is probably a cisco router (for example). Or if it says Linux or FreeBSD or something.. you get the idea. If it says Sega login: then things will be very interesting:-)
I'm not sure I see the advantage of handing space exploration over to big business. Besides satellites, why would businesses want to spend money on space exploration? There is no money in it for them, and the only purpose of a business is to make money.
Furthermore, there is nothing stopping business from exploring space RIGHT NOW... and they obviously aren't doing it, except for sending up a few satellites now and then.. which sort of proves my point. We need a government space program if we want any research to take place that is concerned with things beyond profit margins.
Why are "people" programs better? We can breed and feed the poor any time.. let's build a space station.. it would at least be some meaningful accomplishment in our lives besides just propagating the species. Any cave man can work for "people" -- it takes real intelligence to explore space.
Wouldn't it be easier to launch a shuttle to Mars from a space station than from the surface of the earth?? To me, this seems to be one of the biggest advantages of having a space station.. it will make exploration outside of earth a lot cheaper and easier.
If java is dead then why am I looking at a Java advertisement on the top of the slashdot page as we speak. It seems to be alive and well as far as I can tell!
I think a better solution would be to just call them "Anonymous" instead of "coward." I know it is supposed to be funny, but I think it is just an encouragement for people to post stupid stuff.
If you want "freedom of speech," you are free to speak as much as you want on your own web site. When you are on someone else's site you have to obey their rules. That's just how it is. Freedom of speech applies to public forums, not private web pages. The internet is your stage, use it! just don't complain about someone else's section that isn't speaking your views.
I didn't use Prodigy but I do remember using CompuServe. I had to pay $24 per hour to access CompuServe and I'm still pissed about it!! They made me pay double the price of other CompuServe users because I had a "high speed" 2400 baud modem. Ha Ha. I'm cheering the death of these idiotic services: Prodigy, CompuServe, Genie, etc. I wonder how long AOL will last?
Like all those hard working CEOs??! Hard work playing golf maybe LOL

2nd largest ISP and 1st largest spammer.
Cell phones have had games for quite some time. I have a Nokia 6120 phone with several games built into it.. I think the 5120 has them too.
Unfortunately google does not support - or NOT operators like altavista. Which is really annoying sometimes :-)

Banner ads, just like everyone else.
Yeah, but an earthquake doesn't give you mutant children or cancer.
What is a good shortwave radio for a newbie (such as myself :-) ?

It would be built at the space station of course! It would make launches easier because they wouldn't have to escape earth's atmosphere every time.

Help! My Rumour Mill just ran out of ink!
Does your CLONED SHEEP have a SOUL??? I'm selling them cheap-- only $500 each, while supplies last. Includes certificate of authenticity.

Yeah, I feel your pain. :-) I'm at -7 -- time to make a new account!

Feel free to "just ignore it" all you want, but the rest of us don't feel like spending hours wading through crap to find the good Slashdot posts.

What if the boss is forced to increase wages because of unionization? Then you are anti-union, right? So, really, you are against unions.
Who needs indentation when you can have spaghetti code?
Anyway, local BBSes were where the real fun was.
