  1. Gore-Net? on The Nine Continents of the Internet · · Score: 3

Shouldn't Al Gore get his own continent where he can lord it over all other political candidates?

After all...he did invent the internet.

"Network administrators are being advised to not allow *ANY* Windows 2K clients on networks using a Unix-based DNS system. (The client tries to take over. Can you say "food fight"?)"

Do you have references for this statement?

I'm a unix admin for a "big three" automotive company in Detroit and in their "infinite wisdom" are pushing W2K down the pipe. I'd be really happy to have ammunition to attempt to reverse this decision.

  3. CAEN has been supporting Unix for years... on University of Michigan Linux · · Score: 1

I used to be the Unix admin for the U of M's Space Research building. CAEN had several machines in my building and we had a joint support agreement.

CAEN has been supporting Solaris and HPUX for years and, until a few years ago, supported Digital Unix. (before DEC was pronounced Compaq) However, engineering departments are not required to use CAEN supported machines. They can use use any version of Unix, or other OS, they like. They are required to use Solaris, HPUX and now Linux only if they want CAEN support and standard loads. They just have to support it locally if they choose to use another Unix...hence my job. (I had 9 different flavors of Unix to support, including Red Hat Linux and NeXt.)

Anyway, while the fact that CAEN is supporting a particular build of Linux is interesting, it's not going to fortell sweeping changes on the campus. If an engineer thinks he needs it, he'll get it. If he thinks he needs NT on a DEC Alpha (don't laugh...I had to support three of them) then that's what he'll get.

  5. Isn't this a bit condescending? on Replacing SAT with LEGOs · · Score: 1

To say that "the standardized tests...have been a stumbling block for disadvantaged and minority students" strikes me as being a bit offensive by lumping minorities in with "disadvantaged" students. The color of one's skin certainly has nothing to do with how intelligent one is.

The fact of the matter is that unless you posess certain basic skills like reading, writing and arithmetic you will not get anything useful out of college. Having students play with toys isn't going change that.
Now granted, it's just one of a dozen activities that measure personal traits that may indicate one's ability to learn, but there's one that it's not going to measure...self discipline. Without that, you might as well study at a community college or hold off on school until you develop it. That's not even mentioning the obvious fact that classroom learning requires far different skills than analyzing and reproducing a Lego robot.

I don't see how it's likely that most of these students will be able to compete on a college level and will won't wind up dropping out by their sophomore year. The affirmative action quotas didn't help anyone and I don't see how this will either. Public schools simply have to do a better job of teaching students

What a crock of shit. If I had a penny for every christian with a revisionist view of the founding fathers and their intent, I'd be richer than Bill Gates and Warren Buffet combined.

The founding fathers were not, repeat _not_ christians. They were freemasons. In fact, freedom of religion narrowly beat out freemasonry as the official religion. Christianity wasn't even in the running.

After the war with England, christianity wasn't very popular back then. And just because they mention "God" doesn't mean they were speaking of the god of Abraham...and even if they were, they could be Jewish or Moslem.

This is not a christian country and I, for one, am very happy about that.

"If this story is true ("Red Flag Linux"? sounds pretty dubious to me) might it have something to do with that NSA backdoor that was built into NT 4.0?

Well, it appears obvious to me that the Chinese government wouldn't be too thrilled with a backdoor for our government's NSA being built into their computers. One could easily intrepret this to be a statement to the effect of, "If you want to spy on your own citizens, that's fine by us...but we're not going to let you spy on the Chinese government."

  9. Red Flag Linux is not imposed on Chinese citizens. on China Banning Win2k · · Score: 1

A lot of people are posting about China imposing Linux on its citizens and banning Win2K from them. Read the article again. "China will ban use of Microsoft's new Windows 2000 operating system throughout the government..." That means that they are banning the use of Win2K on government computers, not the computers of its citizens. While it is still a strong statement of the feeling of the Chinese governament about Win2K, it's not as draconian a measure as people are interpreting it to be.
