  1. Re:I hate 3D glasses. on Pixar to Release All New Movies in 3D · · Score: 1

This has been a problem throughout the history of cinema; whenever a new technology was introduced movies became overly gimmicky as everyone focused on the great new thing. (Granted, 3D has been around for a long time, but is experiencing a resurgence).

Movies that focus on *showing off* a new technology (like sound, color or 3D) tend to forget the basics of storyline, character development - you know, the things that make a good movie. With the major changes like sound, eventually everybody stopped being so enthralled with the fact that people in movies could actually talk, and they got back to making movies as usual.

Maybe 3D is different and will always remain a little gimmicky, I don't know. But maybe it could be incorporated into an actual good movie, and Pixar does have a reputation for making films that are well done so if anyone can do it, I'd place my money on them.

  2. Bit Melodramatic? on Writers Find Blogging To Be a Stressful Method of Reporting · · Score: 2, Insightful

The first few paragraphs of this article are so melodramatic that you might be able to convince me it came from The Onion rather than the NY Times. Was the writer bored; felt like being a little dramatic? Did all the editors have the day off? Either way, nice job, NY Times, you've at least amused me.

  3. Re:Sophisticated Buyers on Upgrade Trick Still Present In Vista SP1 · · Score: 1

"I really don't see any compelling new feature or reason to upgrade from XP"

For whatever its worth, one improvement I've noticed in Vista is the Picture Gallery over the Picture and Fax Viewer. It allows you to do simple editing of pictures (crop, brightness, contrast, color temp, tint, saturation, red eye) without having to open a separate program.

I know, nothing terribly exciting... but when I'm using XP at work I find myself missing it a lot. It lets me do quite a bit, while also being quick and simple. It seems well designed. Dare I say such a thing about a Microsoft product?

  4. Re:Hogwash... on Study Shows Males Commonly Mistake Sexual Intent · · Score: 1

"It's not that female signals are unclear. Their signals are emblematic of their internal ambivalence about the nature and extent of their sexual interest. Overlay this with most women's need to validate their own sexual desirability by eliciting male attention even where they have no interest in the guy and the scene is set for a lot of miscommunication."

I completely agree with this. Us females can be complex and we take a while to figure out what we think; how do we know what signals we want to give right away?

Also, as someone who has been in a committed relationship for about six years, I still find it fun (yes, I admit, fun) to flirt with guys. I don't take it very far at all, but it makes me feel better about myself; it makes me feel attractive and desirable. Am I interested in those guys? Well, insofar as it's fun to joke around - sure. But as far as anything actually happening? Not at all.

  5. Re:hmm on Does It Suck To Be An Engineering Student? · · Score: 1

"I think the only majors with a higher general opinion of themselves are philosophy majors."

Maybe philosophy majors gain an elevated opinion of themselves because, well, no one ever really understands what they're talking about. Philosophy, beyond an introductory level, quickly becomes complex and involves terms and ideas that reference many other ideas from other philosopher's work.

Perhaps this is why engineers (and maybe software programmers, etc. as well) can also tend to have an inflated sense of self importance. If other people don't understand what you're talking about, then it's easy to feel like you're more intelligent than they are. This isn't necessarily the case, though. It might just mean that you have more background in that particular area than they do. As a philosophy major myself, I know that I could explain most ideas in philosophy to most people. And I think that I could understand, on a basic level, many engineering concepts.
