  1. Re:What is 'live'? on First Virtual Piano Competition · · Score: 1

The fact is that a piano is an "imperfect" mechanical instrument. Each one is different. Simply transferring mechanical instructions via Disklavier does not guarantee an authentic re-produced as it sounded on the source piano, because the nuances are lost, as well as any adjustments made in performances due to specifics of the piano (action stiffness, release, timbre from low-to high end, etc.).

To a degree, even a halfway decently produced cassette tape or CD would capture the true performance better.

It's just my opinion, but I have played in classical competitions and professional settings for almost 35 years.... and have used the technology.

Do you think that a link to a generally well-received tutorial living on the MS site would actually be posted on /. ?

It would cause a tremor in the force.

    Just wondering on your points....

I wonder if the nature of the creative act by a biblical kind of God isn't a little bit different than the kind you are talking about. The things humans "create" are more like recrafting the raw materials that are already out there, arguably those intangible mental constructs too, since those are by-products of a brain.

If that is the case, I'm not sure how much we can know/say about a true creative act, as we don't have much real experience at that.

... and to think that only 30 minutes ago I just installed the latest version of IE (was re-directed there on browser startup natch)and don't ya know it --- I was working on a spreadsheet (well actually maybe surfing too... but anyway) and the machine restarted. I lost some fairly valuable work. I use MS on my desktop but this kinda pissed me off.

Mod the parent up. It seems like a lot of the conversation about style (braces vs. whitespace) relates to basic human cognition... Some prefer to see nothing while others want to see something.
