I work in advertising--I beleive there is a demonstrable difference between what we do, and... spam.
Generally speaking, advertising agencies use "clean" lists of email address where people have opted in, or have otherwise given their email address in a way that signifies their interest in a particular product or service from a company. They do not blast emails out willy-nilly.
Spammers harvest email address from boards and web sites, send out "seekers" for good addresses, or other generally unwholesome methods. They purposely send out huge quantities of email because its cheap--running the kind of analysis this article talks about is not.
If agencies can use this method to get better results, good for them! That means they are sending mail that resonates with the audience by giving them information they want--so its not spam.
I believe it is illegal in most states to be in possession of 'burglary tools' such as slim-jims, lock picks, and the like unless you are licensed in some way to own them (mechanic, lock smith, etc...).
When (if ever) do 'hacking tools' fall under this category? Obviously any tool can be used with ill-intent, but are there specific pieces of software that could be classified as such?
Car, truck, and motorcycle represent their motors rounded usually to the nearest 100. My 1100cc motorcycle is actually onlt 1085cc. Isnt this sort of behavior rampany? Are 50mg pills always 50mg? Certainly 2x4 lumber is not actually 2x4. I would think making everything absolutely accurate would simple confuse the average consumer.
Whats the point of encrypting the data? The film you take to your local 1 hour photo place isnt protected at all, and places like CostCo leave the developed pictures in large bins for people to collect themselves.
With PARC being a shell of its former self, and other corporate R&D facilites either closed or radically cut back, who else out there is really playing with technologies and trying out new ideas?
While many of the ideas and products mentioned in the article seem silly or useless, its this kind of thinking that leads to inovative products down the road.
Apart from the university setting, who else is out there?
As a Program / Project manager, I beg you: Teach them how to document their work. Image the future programmers of the world knowing how to draw up a schedule, describe their architecture, explain their code base, or god forbid, establish project requirements! Along with that, some basic communication skills would be a wonder...
Thats like saying that expensive cars are not justified by a comfortable ride. Sure they can be expensive, but great software is well worth that. And whats this novice crap? Does its GUI mean that the MacOS is not an expert system?
One of my greatest dissapointments in the Apple product line is the dissapearance of built-in video. One of the great things about the MacOS is the ability to use multiple monitors without special cards, drivers, or work. Many graphic and video professionals use two or more monitors to increase their usable desktop area, and adding a second graphics card uses a valuable slot that may be needed for a compression board, SCSI raid card, ADB card, etc. The built in video doesnt need to be accelerated or have more than 8 megs VRAM. It just needs to support a 17" monitor in 24 bit color. I have my fingers crossed that Apple will resume building machines with built-in video.
The real question is if the general public will accept the Macintosh into the Linux/BSD community. Without question, Apple makes a fine computer, but many users, especially system admins, refuse to admit that anything but Dell, Compaq, or other namebrand Intel/AMD base should be used for their servers. At some point, this becomes a war of religion, not OS.
Jihad!
Whats wrong with Chuck D? Why should Metallica be the ones driving the effort to ban the technology? Chuck D has not made his reputation by being stupid, or speaking out on subjects he know nothing about. Certainly he has as much stake in this effort as any other artist, and who else besides the "owners" of the music are qualified to speak out on its distrubution.
but there isn't even FDIC insurance to protect you if they screw up.

This just seems silly.

What are we protecting against here?

I believe that 'bug' refrers to the graphical element of the logo. All logos that feature a graphic as well as a type treatment have a 'bug'.

We can give this to enemy subs, and send them the "I love you virus". This will overload their hardware, and sink them on the spot

But just think how fast it is for those few hundred users...
