Given that it's physically impossible to test every combination of inputs on a modern CPU, it's reasonable to expect you could slip something in. The NSA is spying on everyone everywhere and has been for a long while without any repercussions to them, so why would they have a problem with giving themselves a back door into the router owned by terrorists or a foreign government? Remember all this spying isn't against you, its against the worst monster the NSA spymasters can think of. That's how they justify everything, think of the worst case and plan for it.
The European Union could afford it. Of course they are already working with the NSA so that won't help any. I expect Russia has a good reason to build chip fabs now.
I doubt they are patching the software, they probably just load a new image into flash. So unless the backdoor from China is in the hardware it's gone. Of course they do make the hardware, so they certainly could be building in a hardware backdoor where nobody would see it- only the NSA caches everything on the network so they would see if there was extra data flowing.
1-If China was back-dooring their routers the NSA would be telling everyone and all the American router makers would be telling everyone. They have far too good a (financial and political) reason to tell for them to keep this secret.
2-China is notorious for copying western stuff, the NSA only has to get their code inserted into all the American network gear and the Chinese copied equipment will have the flaws built in from the factory, all ready for spying.
American companies have shown they will do anything the government asks. So those backdoors are not installed by the NSA, they came like that from the factory. And for simplicity, they probably back-doord everything but have a secret (port knocking) key to enable the backdoor code.

The entertainment industry is easing the ISP's into this. They have convinced the ISP's to set up a monitoring system, with a database of infringers. The next step is the entertainment industry gets the educational letters converted into warning letters. That will be the easy part, as the ISP's have already gotten everything set up to handle the job. Then the three strikes system is implemented.
Earth is a terrible environment for robots. All the water creates corrosion and the molds and biological organisms that feed off of plastics and metals. They would be much better in space, mining the asteroid belt or mars.
The whole point of an H1B visa is they can't choose to stay. It's a temporary worker, locked to a single employer. And after you've finished giving them all your tech they go home and work for a foreign company that competes with you.
If they are paying taxes, how does this harm the USA? They are buying stuff just like Americans do and contributing to the country just like an American does. So long as the spouse isn't locked to the same company as the visa holder it looks like a win all round.
H1B visas are temporary. At the end the workers go back to the third world, minds filled with American science and technology. Who cares about a bunch of tourists? It's the workers taking American technology and know-how back to the third world where it will be used to compete with America that matters.

I don't think so. I believe the real reason for the porno-scanner is to take 3d biometric scans of all travelers. Then when they bring in grainy vid footage of some terrorist they can use the global biometric database to make a short-list of suspects.
Bankers have shown they will do whatever gives them the most money, even if doing so will bring down the nations financial system. The only thing keeping (most) bankers from laundering money for terrorists is the fear of getting caught.

This isn't Star Trek, this is the real world. And in the real world we can't just go visit aliens because it would cause death on a planetary scale.
The Drake equation is all about the statistical chances for life out there. Remember that we see the universe in four dimensions, not three. Mars could have had sentient life two billion years ago for all we know. And as for the great filter, maybe every great civilization stops expanding when they achieve the matrix. Why move to Mars when you can play starship troopers?
Hiroshima isn't "Highly" radioactive. At Bikini Atoll radiation levels have dropped to levels where life has returned. Give it a hundred years and even our worst nuclear war dump site will be livable.
Governments are fully able to solve difficult problems, see universal medicare, roads, sewers, city water. However governments only do what they are told to do, and if the voters only care about pork (and not success) then that's what you get. P.S. people who complain about government incompetence seem blind to corporate evils. The telco's basically run the NSA spying program, but nobody is complaining about anything but the NSA.
