I'm glad people are actually starting to care about noise reduction in PCs. People tend to get a little defensive when the new fan they bought keeps the people in the next apartment awake, just so they can hold onto the few extra MHz they were able to squeeze out.
More on topic, back in my tech days I remember seeing a setup something like this in an IBM case. I don't think the processor had as much need for cooling as the current bleeding edge of speed (it was maybe a Celeron 300 or so) but the heatsink on the CPU was cooled by the fan in the power supply.
I'm no expert but it seems like ducts could work just fine especially if you had a fan the size of the side of your case. Maybe I'll strap a house fan on my box and just set it to low, I hope the magnets don't erase my hard drive.
Ok, this is the best I can come up with: According to dictionary.com a skipjack is a type of sailboat. Valhalla is the viking afterlife for warriors who died in battle. Viking warriors were often either buried in sailboats or cremated in them.
I dunno, I thought the teaser was pretty clear about what the situation was. Especially the part where it says "You can still get the updates for free..."
Maybe you're confusing your initial impression with what is actually written. I've found that actually rereading what you're commenting on ususally clears up this sort of confusion
Hmmm...let me get this straight.
You're bragging about being stupid.
Wow, I'm really impressed. Ok, you win, you are definately slower at learning OSs then I am.
So are you going to overclock this thing? If not then do you really need this kind of stuff. I mean, if they built the machine without it in the first place, it probably will run without it. I'm sure this isn't the kind of answer you're looking for but since it sounds like your on a budget why not just skip the sensors alltogether.
Last summer we had a p150 machine that we salvaged from the local university trash as our server and we didn't have any sort of sensors but it still worked fine.
Y'know I'm sure you mean well, but seriously, lighten up.
I actually have been using linux exlusively for about six months and had been dual booting before that. I've taken classes in unix, etc. i.e. I don't consider myself a newbie.
I just figured that I didn't really need to go trudging through the linuxdoc.org pages about it. I've found the community to be a much more usefull source of information than any how-to file, especially considering how outdated the info often is (though probably not on this topic).
I also figured that other people, even the "trendy" newbies, might be interested trying out a new kernel w/o losing their functional setup.
I do agree with your autoconfiguring kernel idea. I think if most users knew what the benefit of a custom kernel was they'd be willing to wait for it to compile.
Ok this is probably a stupid question that will be labeled Troll and a thousand people will respond with RTFM, but is there a way to have more than one kernel (e.g. a stable one and a development one) on the same machine and boot to one or the other. I feel like I've read this somewere but I can't for the life of me remember.
If anyone feels like telling me to RTFM could you tell me where to find the FM?

arguably one of the most badass games for the PS1 I've played hundreds of hours of this game on a modded console and guess what...I've never played a pirated game *gasp* In fact I know lots of people with mod chips and I don't know anyone who pirates games. (N.B. I think I.S. did eventually come out in the US after a few years)
And don't even get me started on DVD region enconding, can you say fascism?
Ok now to the offtopic section of your post. Explain the intellectual dishonesty in medical marijuana. I personally support it for two reasons.
1. People are suffering needlessly even though a drug to help them can be cheaply produced, simply because W.R.Hearst and Weyerhauser didn't want newspapers to be made out of hemp and because the prohibitionists outnumbered the potsmokers. (Do your homework, it checks out)
2. Medical marijuana is a stepping stone to deregulation.
Honestly ask yourself sometime if you think alcohol should be legal and marijuana shouldn't. Think about someone who gets really high everyday, they're a little dim maybe.
Think about someone who gets really drunk everyday, dead or well on their way, DTs liver damage, etc.
These seem pretty cool (no pun intended) but what happens when it's time to replace your CPU. Just reach in and grab the ol micro-fan heatsink and *crunch* tiny flakes of fan blades all over the inside of your case.
I think I'll just stick with my technique of periodically spraying water into my case.
Um dude,
It's called a peltier and people do use them to cool CPUs. Although they acutlly just pump the heat from one side to another so it doesn't really help that much.
Man can't someone make a joke on./ anymore? It's not like this is a topic that needs lots of serious discussion. If anyone gets a chance to meta moderate this, get rid of the offtopic.
I wonder if you could see them on Ebay? Maybe try selling of shares or something like that... probably againt their rules. I bet you'd get lots of visibility that way though.
A few questions:
Are they housetrained? If I buy both of them do I have to keep them in seperate cages or can I let them play together? Is there any sort of special diet I need to be aware of? (I'm not sure if the dollar store is still selling six packs of Jolt and I'm morally against "extreme" doritos)
Actually, I agree. I don't think piracy is really a good idea. But it's difficult because I don't think that charging for software is a good idea either. Don't get me wrong if Adobe started selling Photoshop for $20 I'd definitely buy a copy (assuming it ran under linux)
I suppose you're right about the microsoft "tax" I just wasn't thinking about it because most of the people I know either build their own computers or have been upgrading piece by piece since they first bought them. I do think that every time Microsoft comes out with a new OS a lot of piracy happens as everyone upgrades (at least on college campuses that's how it works)
I agree that we should just use the best products but I think the matter gets complicated when you start hearing phrases like "industry standard" and they apply to overpriced products.
I wonder how close these wire are to the point where you can't run a current through them.
It seems like this would be a pretty simple process for making transistors, though maybe the current process is cheaper because it's so well developed.
Does anyone know the actual limit for the smallest wire you can pass a current through? I think it's.0somthing mircons...
I actually have to read something! Oh man this sucks...wait, I have to read this conservative tripe! I guess I'll just stay a "moron"...hey I should run for president!

And I can't believe you actually think foxnews is anything but completely worthless. I mean, do you live in a hole. Try CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS or anything, hell bloomberg it's all better than fox.
Just remember it's never too late to start thinking intelligently.
This summer I lived in a house with some other students and we hooked up our DSL router/file server to the TV, slapped a couple of game controllers in it, loaded it up with Divx movies and mp3s, and we had an all purpose entertainment machine. It was great at parties to put a plugin on and turn the lights off.
But, I think if you try to integrate a computer into your home theatre system etc. it works best to just give up on doing real work on it. I personally wouldn't want to sit in the middle of the living room and write a term paper.
As more people start putting computers in places outside the home office I think it will be easier to use them in a more multipurpose way. (I think having a network encourages it too)
I think what's more important than the fact that they're compiling Sci-Fi definitions is that they're looking at the origins.
This is really what makes the OED so much better than any other dictionary. As a student of classical languages I can't express how enough how annyoing it is to hear someone incorrectly use a word they got out of the thesaurus . I think the OED is sort of the anti-thesaurus, really.
Now I'm not a huge Sci-Fi geek, (Except for quoting the Star Wars movies at appropriate times in conversation.) but I'm sure they feel the same way when people talk about the "Vulcan face-grab".
Maybe I don't know enough about the issue, but this seems like a good decision to me.
Bush making a good decision...I must not understand the issue fully.
Seriously, unless I'm missing something major this seems like a great idea to me. I think it's great that Bush is doing something AGAINST American opression. Yes, let them have good computers, maybe *gasp* they'll get a chance to overcome their poverty.
Although I think this maybe counter productive to Bush's agenda. I mean, if they aren't desperately poor where are we going find sweatshops to make our Old Navy fleeces!
If someone thinks I'm being really stupid and missing the point please explain why this isn't a good decision. Give me a reason to hate the president, I didn't vote for him!

I think we could solve this complex engineering puzzle by flipping the fan.
