    No, but I do here people who go in to modify something say "Gosh, I wish there weren't so many different types of connectors, why does this screw have a starburst and this one a rhombus on it?"

    Easy: different physical / mechanical properties to tweak each a given job. Can you use a plywood screw to attach together two load bearing 2x4 ? Sure, but they might corrode faster and fail sooner than proper wood screw (not to say that it's the best). Same goes for torx vs 6-point vs 12-point bolt, same goes for grade 2 vs grade 5 vs grade 8 bolts / nuts.
