  1. Re:Bigger issue than glare on Laptops Screens, Glare or Matte? · · Score: 1

"Widescreens do not inherently sacrifice vertical resolution."
That maybe true, but the marketers are the ones behaving badly here. If I go out and buy a 19inch "widescreen", I would expect it to be a 19 inch monitor with some wide bits on the side. What you are really buying, (and I know because I got burned on this) is a 17 inch monitor widened out so that the diagonal measurement reads 19 inches.

This is, if not outright lying, being very very deceptive. My 22 inch for instance, is the same height as my 19inch, but wider. I would label the 22 inch widescreen as a 19 inch widescreen. I have known several people to get burned upgrading from a 19 inch square to a 19 inch widescreen and actually losing screen space as it is really a 17.

"The reason that widescreen is the new big thing, is so that they can keep market prices high while offering the same or VERY SLIGHTLY more service (technical features) than before"
Well that could be one reason, but the reason they are being pushed so heavily, or so I have heard, is that its less wasteful to run off a bunch of wide screen monitors than it is to run of the square ones. They waste less material in the fabrication process and can make more screens on a given manufacturing run. Im not an engineer so im not sure of the exact numbers, but that was the reason given for square monitors actually being more expensive than wide screen ones.

    "Don't be childish about it."
The only thing childish about advertising is that people expect you to act like a child and conform to a sick world where psychological manipulation is plastered across every surface. Please do some research on the history of advertising, its freudian and fascist links, and the harm it does to individuals, society and the earth itself. The purpose of advertising is to make you consume more and more and not be content unless you are consuming. Aside from the fact that this is not sustainable in the long run (scarcity of resources), it promotes greed, suffering and supports a reinforcing cycle of despair.

Advertising apologists should be shot along with all the rest of the marketeers.

I purchased a santa cruz in 2000 or so and up until it was replaced, it had richer fuller sound than any other card I had tried. Previous to that I was using a soudblaster 512 which they discontinued in favour of bringing the EXACT same card to market under the title of "sb live", and costing IIRC double the price. You can see that creative has been pricks for pretty much their entire existence. The main reason to move away from creative is their god awful driver suite. I have never had a turtle beach card or driver crash, period. Not to mention that they dont install a fuckton of TSRs and spew crap all over the system.

Currently I run a turtle beach montego DDL 7.1, and its simply flawless. The only problem I've ever had is getting their cheaper card (riveria) in canada. Its practically the same as the montego, but for half the price (30 bucks) and no 7.1.

Well there is that theory (forever peace i think?) which states that universes get "reset" every time a civilization advances enough to try and recreate the big bang, which of course they succeed at, and the universe is reset. I'd say if there was even the remotest chance of runaway ice9-esque stranglets, than this should not be attempted. Someone else brought up the atom bomb, and the fears it would burn off the atmosphere. Would it be so terrible if the scientists of the day had agreed with them and stopped development? Not like the world really needs atom bombs, perhaps this is similar in its insignificance.

Wikipedia agrees with you(albiet with no source) but I really dont remember it that way. I remember distinctly, when the bitching about UO turned from fuck OSI to fuck ea. Maybe they just gained more control over the games structural decisions, but there was definitely a point where EA took over UO and ruined the shit out of it, (around year 2000?).
    I was there, I remeber.
