Under a law like this, CDDB could be held accountable for disallowing users of Grip and any other ripping/burning software that are legal in and of themselves.

There's actually a term for this (if you live in missouri you probably know what it is;-)
It's called T.O.M.A.
I remember when i as living in columbia, we used to see these 30second spots in between shows. They just showed some people eating, or walking, or whatever normal people do. A voice-over was ranting on about this and that "Who do your customers think of when they blah blah blah." And then they cut to a black screen.
"TOMA! If you're in business, you gotta have it."
And guess what: they never told you what TOMA was. TOMA spots ran for three months without a peep. But if i called out to one of my friends on campus "TOMA!" - they would immediately yell back at me "If you're in business, you gotta have it!" None of us knew what it was but EVERYONE knew of it. I called a guy at TCI one day during a tech support call i was taking, and i happened to ask him what TOMA was. He said he didn't know, but he told me to call him back if i found out. I don't think i spoke to a single person over the span of a month that hadn't seen that commercial and wasn't intrigued by it. Even the ads were a perfect example of TOMA.
desining games around 28.8 links isn't really going to do anything for you on an FPS. This has been an issue since they days of Quake. I used to dial a friend's house and he used to rock my world w/ a railgun because of the latency issues involved.
It worked the same way with the servers we used to join up on gamespy. I remember when just about everyone on a server had 250+ ping and the lucky sons-a-bitches were the guys pushing anything less than 100. We were ALL HPB's at that time because Quake wasn't really designed for anything but dialup. But - you remember when you joined that server and were playing against the guy in college with the 20ms ping time? He owned everybody (except for that one dude in the really good clan [ThreeLetterAcronym]-Jesus- or whatever his name was on your server). The point is this: the guy with the fattest pipe wins every time in an FPS because the data that can be pushed is completely dependant on your connection. Even a game designed for a 56k link. The guy on the OC-3 is just going to say to the server "Ok, i got that, now gimme more!"
The only other "quit your bitchin!" point i want to make is this: MAKE BROADBAND A PRIORITY IF YOU REALLY WANT IT THAT BAD! In every apartment/house/cardboard box that i look at, one of the first questions i ask is "Can i get broadband, and how's the quality?" If the answer to those questions does not seem favorable to my being able to thwap the fsck out of my CS pals on a nightly basis, then i move on to the next place because broadband is a major factor in my decision on where/when to move. You can never disprove the theory of a deity for two simple reasons:
A)God is an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent "thing" - therefore, theists have the luxury of making shit up as they go along. "Hey." they say, "God works in mysterious ways." I've always loved that one. Evolution is a perfect case in point: How many "christians" do you know that actually believe the world is only 5,000-6,000 years old? They don't have to believe that because some dickhead ruined my life 2,000 years ago by saying that we don't have a clue as to what god is or does, so we should all just shut the hell up and give our tythe like nice little zealots.
B)In philosophical terms, you can never truly prove or dispove anything (e.g. "woah, man, what if we're all, like, just living, like, in like, someone's dream dude...and like, when they wake up, we all die and shit!")
Of course, we can say that, as for concept B: get a clue people! we have to just accept certain things to make progress. Hume proved that we can't assume that fundamentals like gravity will continue to exist, and that you could walk off a tall building and expect to float with just about as much certainty as you would expect to fall - but you don't see many people other that stock brokers for dot-com's testing that idea much.
as for concept A? Let's just put it this way: No, we can't prove that there isn't a god with 100% certainty. But, at some point, christians begin to look pretty fucking dumb when *fact* after *fact* rooted in their theology gets torn to pieces faster than a clan member trying to buy a used stereo in harlem.

you do bring up a very interesting point, one that i should have mentioned in my post, or at least one caveat i should have mentioned in my post.
the reason the bulk of any company's employees can fight against something like this is because it's not just knowledge of software, or some OS the company risks losing on a push-through. They risk losing people who actually know how that particular company works. It is widely held that when you take a new job (any skilled labor, not just "IT") it takes at least 3-6 months to ramp up to where you need to be.
Now, this is all well and good when a company needs to replace a few people who left, but imagine 50% of employees threatening to walk if the PHB's put into place something they don't like. Yes, there is certainly a possibility that the company could get back up from a blow like that, but the odds are heavily against it. They would be stagnant for at least 3 or 4 months, just sitting there burning capital. And, at least in IT, 3 to 4 months is a lifetime.
Of course, the only thing a company hates worse than employees threatening to leave en masse is a nice fat law suit. I don't think i need to elucidate the possiblities of that one for you;-)
FluX After 16 years, MTV has finally completed its deevolution into the shiny things network
i would argue that the article is more or less about the dangers of cloning. Humanity's ultimate doom being one possible aspect of actually doing this.
But, i do thank you for your well thought out, concise, and intelligent troll. Of course, if it wasn't a troll then you, my friend, are a perfect example of why we, as a human society, should never be allowed to clone ourselves.
FluX After 16 years, MTV has finally completed its deevolution into the shiny things network
could anyone give me a nice plausible step by step theory where step 1 is "a human is cloned" and step n
is "our ultimate doom"?
I think it's a very cute notion that most people have when arguing about preventing the cloning of humans. Why do you assume that anyone who is in favor of holding off on this for a bit longer believes that clones will, in fact, spell out the demise of all life on earth?
I, for one, am an opponent of cloning humans (at least right now) for several very simple reasons. A) I believe that we (as humans) cannot take very good care of ourselves or our home (read:earth) right now. 30 years ago we came exceedingly close to ridding this planet of all life, except possibly that of insects. That does not bode well for any other life we bring into the picture. I trust this society to not fuck this up about as much as i trust a recovering crack addict locked in a police evidence room.
B)This is a pandora's box. The arguments i've seen on this matter come down to the same thing. Two groups arguing over which is right, caution, or innovation. This argument starts out in a relatively intelligent tone, and soon disintegrates into a "Yes you are," "No i'm not" debate about who's a prude and who's a moron. So i will say this once, and all i ask is that people seriously reflect on this: Cloning is a one way function. we now have the power to clone a human. And, i agree that this, in and of itself, is a signifigant achievement. But, what we ALL need to ask ourselves is what are all of the consequences of this action. Good and bad. If you think that no good can come from this, then you are naieve. If you think that no bad will come from this, then you are as equally naieve. But, in all honesty, i haven't seen a perfectly intelligent argument as to where this will put us in 50 years from either side. And that, to me, is not a reason to give the go ahead to something that has the serious potential to alter all of our societal views as this does.
Fundamentally this argument is between the misanthrops and those who have faith in humanity. Me? I take the misanthropic view: we, as a human society, can't even raise our own children to be good people, why bring clones in to the picture now? we're just going to fuck that up too.
