  2. Re:Hype? on A.I. and Robotics Take Another Wobbly Step Forward · · Score: 4, Insightful

Robotics is a lot like graphical photorealism/virtual reality. People have been predicting it for decades, but the actual nuance of such an achievement is much more complex than most are able to comprehend. As such, we're perpetually surrounded by the hype.

  4. Why waste time with the zune? on Microsoft To Exit the Zune Business? · · Score: 1

A better question is, why waste time reading an article that has half the story. What sort of "pundit" makes predictions based on that sort of information? The entire thing hinges on PROFIT, which is skillfully avoided throughout that piece. Assumably, this isn't an xbox situation, surely these devices are not being sold at a loss.

  5. My impression of mad was always on What, Me Worry? MAD Magazine Going Quarterly · · Score: 2, Insightful

The "parody" pieces were rarely funny but stuff like the "lighter side of..." was always quite decent.

If they had a daily "lighter side of" (or perhaps spy vs spy) online I'm sure they'd build up a decent following and stream for ad impressions. Comic magazines like Mad and Viz (British) are missing the electronic boat.

  8. Bane of all standards testing on Energy Star Program Needs an Overhaul · · Score: 3, Interesting

The television in question appears to be actively "on" in the sense that the tuner is on and is sourcing program guide information in standby. When the tuner is not, the consumption is as claimed.

Suggesting that the testing regime is faulty is a stretch. As with all the other qualms mentioned in the article, you have to question whether the manufacturer provided a proper product, rather than one designed to pass, followed by production of one with "faulty firmware".

There isn't a whole lot of restriction out there for this type of practice in any standards testing. At least, you can get away with it, most of the time. I doubt there are many people charged with testing retail devices to see if energy star compliance is maintained. I'd guess that was the major problem.

  17. Wii Retro on The Art of Downloadable Game Development · · Score: 2, Insightful

Shame the wii retro console titles don't have any graphical filter work done on them. Depending on your loyalty to bad graphics, I found it difficult to commit to playing Donkey Kong Country with such awful pixelation (regular large lcd tv) when I could just as easily play the superior, smoothed (via emulator) and very functional version on my xbox 1.

I think that Nintendo sold us short on that (rather than the idea that they the left it that way for the purists). I'd rather play DKC on a nintendo but the difference is massive and stays in line with my impression of the Wii. Which is, that it is a console dominated by mediocre exploitation of the mainstream crowd it has sucked in. The amount of truly horrendous (and non functional) software out there for the Wii is staggering. Once upon a time, you couldn't put a game out if Nintendo didn't think it was up to scratch.
