    Oh I wanted to add something more there ...

    "Steal" the same DVDs using a torrent client, or indeed simply lose the licences for copies you really DID purchase legitimately, and you'll be given a 100,000 dollar fine by the BSA.

    Seems the picture even even worse than before.

    The irony is, if you steal real MS Office Installation DVDs from a shop, you'll be given a caution or possibly community service. It is considered petty theft after all.

    "Steal" the same DVDs using a torrent client, and you'll be given a 100,000 dollar fine by the BSA. And it's not entirely clear what portion of that 100,000 dollars actually makes it's way back to Microsoft at all.

    Can anyone see anything wrong with this picture ?

    Yes, but I'd imagine for 51% of the userbase (i.e. the females), it's the "gossip" factor that makes Facebook so attractive. X said Y about Z. Y posted a picture about X, which Z said was cute. Its the digital equivalent of a bunch of females exchanging gossip on their doorsteps.

    Once you start limiting who can see what, it becomes no better than any other messaging / collaboration system. It becomes an "anti-social" network in essence. X posted something, but Y is not in the right group so he can't get to see what he said.

    In France, where nuclear fuel is recycled, the lifetime total nuclear waste for a family of four fits in a single coffee cup.

    So let's apply France's wonderful system to the world yes ?

    Global Population = 6697254041
    In "Familys of Four" = 1674313510

    Volume of a typical coffee cup = 250cc (or 0.00025m3)

    Total waste = 417578 m3

    Which is about half the volume of Wembley Stadium (sorry, I'm not sure what that is in Libraries of Congress).

    Actually, that isn't TOO bad for 70 years of power is it ? Maybe they have it right for once !

    I'm somewhat confused by your logic ?

    If I have one core and Flash runs at N 100% then that is all fine and dandy. You are willing to accept that as an (albeit anecdotal) statement of fact. Which of course it MUST be, because any application that REALLY took 100% of all CPU cycles would kill the kernel dead.

    If I have many cores and Flash runs ONE of those cores at N = 100%, then surely that is a demonstration that multiple cores are not as efficient as N single cores (memory and bus contention issues etc).

    How exactly is that Flash's fault ???

    Yet you'll all come out with balnket bullshit statements like "Flash is a piece of shit, it sucks up 100% of my CPU", which is blatantly false.

    Try getting Javascript + HTML5 to give the same performance as Flash (game wise, I don't want a flame war over video formats), and see what that does to your CPU.

    This is all well and good, but by the time they get it 99.9999% compatible, it'll have such a terrible reputation that no one will entertain using it.

    And compatible with what exactly ? XP SP 2 ? Vista ? WIndows 7 ?

    Every time there's an Automatic Update, DLLs get updated, functionality is added/lost ... what exactly is the target platform they are aiming for ?

    Performance is not a priority for Wine

    Makes you wonder exactly what IS a priority for Wine ?

    Hell, if we're playing that game, I have an artificial intelligence program that 100% mimics the human brain. It might take 25 years to emulate 1 microsecond of REAL brain activity, but performance is not a priority with my software. "Buy One Now (tm)".

    When you are speaking about yourself in the first person, there is usually little need for the "I am", "I will", "I should" etc. It is implicit that you are talking about yourself.

    Example.

    Q. "Where are you going ?"
    A. "To the mall"

    There is absolutely no need to use the expanded "I am going to the mall". Unless you are six. How old are you by the way ?

    By criticizing ONE mistake in someone's spelling, you managed to commit THREE mistakes yourself. Namely, you omit a comma, capitalize all the words for no reason, AND misspell 'you' as 'ya'.

    I am with you 100% on B OR C, but it seems pretty obvious to me that A is applicable to BOTH.

    The applicable clauses are :-

    (A + B) OR (A + C)

    In both cases, clause A is applicable, thus my point still stands, in that the infringement must be "for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain", which as I have stated above does NOT apply to the casual downloader and personal use.

    This criminal law can only ever apply to commercial distribution of pirated PHYSICAL media copies.

    Well that is interesting, but you seem to have some problem with the fact that ALL the criteria have to be met, and not just the one that suits you (Section 1, Clause B).

    1) In general. -- Any person who willfully infringes a copyright shall be punished as provided under section 2319 of title 18, if the infringement was committed --

    (A) for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain;

    Now this isn't a "piracy ring", so I'm not going to be stamping out 1000 copies on DVD and selling them on street corners. So I have NO commercial advantage or private financial gain. This is personal use, no further distribution occurs.

    And before you start arguing I have deprived the producer of a "sale", ergo I made a financial gain, you might just as well argue that by reading a book borrowed from a library, I am suddenly richer by the cover price !

    Troll must try harder, personal downloading via torrents etc is ALWAYS a civil matter. Mass producing pirate DVDs and selling them for profit is a criminal matter. Like everything else in life, it's all about following the money.
