  1. Re:It's a serious art form on Reading Comics · · Score: 1

I agree with you there - that's why I feel that it needs to be read several times to pick up on all those nuances. What I found really interesting to discover while going through some really old comics from the early 80s is that Alan Moore's original 'Watchmen' proposal was going to use all the old Charlton heroes that DC had acquired, like Nightshade (read Silk Spectre) Blue Beetle (read Nite Owl) and Captain Atom (read Dr Manhattan), but this was turned down because DC already had plans for them within continuity, so he had to create new heroes for the story - if you're fans of mainstream comics and like the Charlton heroes (Blue Beetle has always been a favourite of mine) it's quite interesting picturing what Watchmen would be like with these heroes instead.

  2. Re:Comics as real literature on Reading Comics · · Score: 1

Simple answer: Read Sandman, the entire series, preferably with all the attendant miniseries' etc - it IS the single greatest piece of comic book literature ever written! BTW, try reading Watchmen again - I had a similar experience the first time I read it, but after two or three repeats, the nuances, obscure references and enjoyable tips-of-the-hat all start to come through...
