  1. Something to check on on Network Security While Traveling? · · Score: 2, Insightful

You should check to make sure that any encryption software you use or bring is legal in the areas you will be traveling in. I know that the legal standards are different between, for example, the US and France (or it was last time I read about it). I have no idea about specifics of different countries, but it is something that you should know before you set out. And not just the laws, but also look into what to expect when you go through checkpoints - I have no idea if I am actually required to reveal an encrypted volume on my laptop when going through customs coming into the US. And what do I do if the person checking says that they require all of my passwords? (My only thought here would be to make a set of temporary passwords while going through, and then to change them all back after) Sorry I do not have any helpful links. I figure that the time I could spend looking would be a good bit more than the time spent by the person who knows what country to actually look at. Hope it helps.

  2. Important difference on Are You a Blue-Collar Or White-Collar Developer? · · Score: 2, Informative

I think the difference in the words "developer" and "coder" are important to any argument made - If all you need is someone who's job is only to write code, then yeah, a coder is a coder. However, if you need someone who is familiar with algorithms, theory, life cycle management, requirements engineering, etc., then you probably would want someone with a four year degree. Granted, even then there is no promise that the person knows more if they are a coder/degree holder, but generally the person looking at a stack of resumes will see that one extra accomplishment, and it very well might make their decision that much easier.

  3. Re:I know who has the least... on Who Installs the Most Crapware? · · Score: 1

Although the programs are arguably good stuff, on the Mac I am using right now, I have the following list of stuff installed that I never have used: Address Book, Front Row, iCal, iChat, Image Capture, iPhoto, iSync, Mail, Safari (except to get a different browser) and Stickies. There are also a few that I have only used once or twice: Chess, Calculator and iTunes. And a few I don't know if I have used: Automator, Expose, Font Book, and iMovie. Now my understanding is that many of these are good, useful programs (and done far better than a bunch of the crapware out there, I know). However, I don't use them much (if at all), and the only reason they still exist on my laptop is because I am too lazy to worry about taking them off. That is why I argue that Apple is no different in putting on a bunch of stuff you don't need.

  6. How many potential planets? on 32 Exoplanets Discovered By Chilean Telescope · · Score: 1

Has anyone seen anything about what percentage of the total stars in the galaxy could have planets, or even of those how many would have rocky planets? I have seen estimates that anywhere between 20% and maybe as high as 60% of sun-like stars could have rocky planets, but then I cannot find an estimate for what kind proportion of stars are sun-like (although Wikipedia indicated that 7.6% of main sequence stars fall into the same spectral category as the sun, but then how many stars are in their man sequence?). I have also read things about how many stars have been found with planets, and how many have been looked at, but I would assume that they are using some bias about what stars to look at in order to save time and work.
