  2. clear things up on Government Ponders Future Of Y2K Command Bunker · · Score: 1

Just wanted to say a few things. My dad worked at the ICC, he even layed out a diagram of the network. I actually got a tour of the place (including the computer center), by the way the network management workstations run Linux, and most of the heavy duty servers run Solaris. They did spend a lot of money, but it was warranted, as they wanted to be able to monitor everything that was going on. I believe the real problem is that a lot of the equipment belongs to FEMA, and they want it back. Oh yeah, and the ICC is on the 8th and 10th floors of the building.

  3. Re:They kind of splurged on Government Ponders Future Of Y2K Command Bunker · · Score: 1

Believe it or not, my dad laid out the plans for the place and was working there during the rollover. The point of the plasma screens and all the new technology was so that everyone could monitor all the TV stations all the time. They might have splurged some, but not too much. They wanted to monitor everything that was going on.

Where I go to school at the Math Science Computer Magnet at Montgomery Blair in Silver Spring, we've had a Linux server for at least 5 years. We students get to do coding with gcc, send email, etc. There is a sort of geeky community which has developed around the server. We have classes from Java to C++ to Networking. We also have a LUG (MBLUG) which I founded :-) We currently have 3 Linux machines (not including the server) on the network. We had about 10 students and 2 teachers show up for Linux Demo Day. Power to the other geeky high schools out there!

The real problem here is fear of change. It's built into humans. Most people I come across are happy and comfortable in their Microsoft niche, or so they think. Many people respect Microsoft just because it's in the position that it is, not for anything else. That's why the story didn't surprise me. People are afraid to get out of their Microsoft habitat.
