or install it once and then take distribute the stub installer and the file "QuickTime Install Cache"(which should be several megs after the first install) and then install it on your other computers. DAMNIT
Why should we be force fed Quicktime just because it has been around longer?
boo hoo then don't watch it. QT is a good solution, you may not realize it but it is. It isn't like qt isn't evolving
If Apple had a Quicktime codec available for UNIX before, why discontine it?
apple had qt 2 for SGI(actually sgi licensed it from apple). qt3 brought a LOT of new stuff. Why don't you whine to red hat or slackware to license quicktime from apple ? Or save your pennies and license it yourself:)
Considering Linux's large user base . . . . of servers and people who can boot in to windows or use vmware if they want to.
But then again, going for market share has never been Apple's style
agreed
it's antiquated, it's nagware, and is not available for non-Windows/Mac platforms....encode all their video with MPEG
did you ever notice that you whine a lot? antiquated - no it isnt. nagware- yup. not avalible for AIX or Solaris or linux or freebsd or dos or acorn or Be OS or Digital unix- are you really surprised? BTW you should be pleased to hear that the next version of QT will include compression and decompression of MPEG 1 & 2
(well, actually, decoder, but Windows calls 'em codecs to sound cool)
No they call it a codec because that is what it is(and because everyone else in the industry calls it that(apple, avid,ms,adobe, terran, real, etc)) Codec means COmpressor-DECompressor. It isn't just a word MS made up(if they did it would be "MS activeintellipowercompressordecompressorvideothing )
REALLY hate the player.
so use a browser & the plug in
why are they even using QuickTime? QuickTime isn't free
OH MY GOD! software that isn't free!!! I hope the rest of the software industry doesnt hear about this!
actually quicktime is free/nagware. try iShell or quickedit for a free/shareware player/editor alternative to the official quicktime player. I'm sure you could find a free player for windows if you actually looked.
(PLUS there's all the sites that embed the QT movie - I'd rather download the thing
I take it then that you havent seen HP's recent ads "Simple to the point of duh"
The sealed slotless box actually makes a lot of sense. Look at how many people & corporations simply discard their box after 2 years (or less!). why upgrade when you can buy new (and keep in mind your hourly rate as you explain to a 63 year old woman that she has to open the computer to install the ram and not just stick it in the cd slot) And of course look at how many people don't need an expandable computer.
god what a moronic comment. MS owns the code. If the kernal monkey broke a ms nda then ms is enforcing the contract and protecting their property.
let me rephrase your post in hopes of making you understand your astounding lack of sense:
You have a monopoly on what goes in/out of your butt. You use your right to say that you dont want ben wa balls crammed in your butt by a hairy guy named Waldo. Omigosh! You are using your rights to protect your monopoly therefore you may lose your right to decide what does in/out of your butt.
Monopolies are defined by a market class not an item !
The MS Player can decode QT3 files but QT4 decoding is lacking
that should be Quicktime_*2*_ not Quicktime3. MS wmp decodes the rather ancient cinepac(k?) video codec What do you miss? Lots and lots of stuff including but not limited to Sorenson video, Qdesign music , quicktime's crappy vector format, and i think wired sprites debuted in QT3.
actually mac os x has been released. mac os x server was released in april of 1999 if i remember correctly
what in the world makes you think that when mac x is released (when ever that'll happen) that someone won't have an X server and a kde port? There are currently 2 x servers for macosxs(one called MaX and the Carmack port).
stabilityHave you ever used anext cube or openstep? Why do you think a microkernal is inherently less stable than a monolithic kernal? Why arent you pointing at its bsd roots? Have you used macosxserver?
if apple is only going to suppport apple G3s why would you imagine they support a 586? If apple supports x86 (which i doubt) it'd probably be compaqs and dells from x date. And their driver kit is supposed to be pretty nice, that'd help.
eatable*nix loses a point for how unbelievably ugly x windows *can* be
>Has Apple learned anything from A/UX? Perhaps. But they likely forgot it.
one thing they learned would by running classic macos as a unix process
>One of the biggest stumbling blocks for A/UX was the resistence of Apple users to switching to Unix, even an Apple Unix.
I thought one of the biggest stumbling blocks was the fact that a/ux was based on system V and as such had to pay at&t or whoever. the $600-800 price tag probably turned off a lot of mac users. The 60 pounds of documentation probably turned off others. Others were probably turned off by the fact that a/ux wasnt taken very seriously by apple(look at how few macs it'll run on and though a/ux was updated i think twice the 'classic mac' was never updated - stuck at system 7.0.1)
from the a/ux about box : "It's clever, but is it art?"
Mediaplayer is more of a worm. It seems like anything i install wmp gets installed too. I happen to have 6 different ms mediplayers. I'm afraid to trash any because i'm afraid it'll break something
It isnt like wmp doesnt hijack files...actually this is a case where ms can be blamed -even when ms gets shafted by QT- if windows had a better way of associating files with applications it wouldnt happen (of course then ms couldn't hijack the files at their whim.)
ok , so lets drop say sixteen hundred on a good intel or amd box(or more because it has to do photohop _really_ well because your liveley hood depends on it) and then spend $500 on photoshop for windows and another 500 on Quark and another $500 on Freehand.(you werent naive enogh to think any of those ship on hybrid cds were you?)And just throw out every other software youve bought and you lose all you tiny custom photoshop icons(which beleive it or not are very useful) (and after you realize win98 is too unstable spend $200+ on winNT)
apple has probably noticed this too;^)
And many designers enjoy using MacOS because it is a very visual oriented system. They enjoy using it.(they enjoy using it in spite of it)
then you have to contend with the rest of the migration... resource forks, converting your files, reformating all your disks (& reburning CDs)and putting your head through the monitor because random windows annoyances(not including crashing)
Oh and lets not forget tossing the knowledge you have of troubleshoting extension conflicts(remove file from ext folder...see if it fixes the problem if not put it back and try a different one) and replace it with editing the windows registry and rearranging dlls and eventually hosing it all(hey i've done that) and having to spend an hour or 7 reinstalling EVERYTHING(ive done that too) OR with linux editing text files to toy around with preferences and when the newbie linux-nee-mac user accidently oops shuts off x11(which generally is much too ugly for a mac user to stand-and eventually a mac user will do it because of their mac knowledge that if they screw something really really bad the can spend 20 minutes doing a clean install of the system and then just drag files from one system folder to the new one) and lets see is it "#start x", "#start x windows", hmmmmm how about "#open x windows" or maybe some applescript syntax "#tell application "Xwindows to open", umm maybe "#win"?
like i said a lot of mac users use it because they enjoy using it.
don't forget that MS's MSDN also (somewhere) has some source for a Word document viewer
the only problem is that it a) doesnt seem to render most Word docs correctly and b) the license states that you can _only_ use it under Windows
but of couse that doesnt really matter since its pretty worthless anyway. Personally i've been waiting a couple years for the opensource movement to come up with a metadocument(by the way the other things i'm waiting for are audio & video codecs, some kind of platform abstraction so linux binaries can run on x86, ppc, alpha, andall the rest(i don't know how to do it but it needs done), an X-windows replacement (one isn't butt ugly, doesnt suck, and knows the difference between a client and a server;^p) and finially a nice abstracted unix management tool.
50 is not a worthwhile/ significant sample when the total is several millions.
Count the first 50 people you see out your window and ask your self if they are a fair represention of the population of your country/continent/ planet?
Man, I hope they didn't make that page with Word.:)
that was supposed to be a checkmark. Actually the fault isn't necess arially with Word. I don't think it is too much for Adobe Acrobat to expect that most people on the plant have the wingDing font
But yeah Creator:Microsoft Word Producer: Acrobat PDfWriter 3.0 for windows created last sunday even! I wonder if this Dave Eckert (listed as author) got paid overtime?
the Hindenberg exploding wasnt reported live. it was recorded by a dj from a chicago radio station(WLS i think) He paid his own way to NJ and then after he made perhaps one of the most well known radio recordings in history the radiostation canned him like a month later. (on a side note in the sixties he was a dj for another chicago station playing realllllly mellow music. He also sounded really really effeminate when not screaming hystericly)
When i first installed linux i accidently wiped out windows (not a big loss - my excuse for such a stupid mistake : incoherent from lack of sleep (or as some may look at it "the right way to install linux"))
My second attempt was successful(mostly) but it wasnt as easy as installing Windows and dear god nothing near as easy as installing macOS. Making the installer less ugly, less stupid, and less frustrating would also help.
(oddly i've always have more problems installing 98 than NT)
i read through some asf (or was it aaf?)docs a few months ago and it was like reading quicktime docs. It seemed to me like a clone of quicktime's file format(except qt uses a sing;le format for authoring and streaming(and QT plays qtvr correctly instead of as a sideways linear movie))
wmp / MS being more open...somebody get out the cluestick. are the MS codecs being licensed to xanim? are thewy sharing the file format? are they opening the server ?
just use mediaplayer and then all your filetypes will be associatd with wmp. woo hoo.
when you first use the quicktime player doesnt it ask if you want to associate the file types w/ qt? If you do a custom install cant you pick and choose the associations? To be honest i dont remember
a lot of macs are single purpose : for fast photoshop. Multitasking not required.
So far, it is vapor
-bzzzzt-!! try again ! mac os x server shipped over a year ago (not to mention the release of macosxbeta)
on a side note i wonder how old you are ? 15? 16? your post certainly doesnt read like it was written by a grown up.
Isnt equating using powerpoint presentations to get your jobs done an oxymoron or something?
then download it DAMNIT(as you said so eloquently)! Either dl the complete installer from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/support/
DAMNIT(hey i like saying that!)
or install it once and then take distribute the stub installer and the file "QuickTime Install Cache"(which should be several megs after the first install) and then install it on your other computers. DAMNIT

a pretty cheap marketing ploy eh?
which some may remember as being named as "Parliment Funkadelic" ("P-Funk")
If i remember right they used to be James Brown's back up band

How many MSexclusive patents are introduced into the embraced and extended mpeg-4 stepchildren?
Why is MS releasing a codec that they claim to be mpeg4 before the mpeg group completly defines mpeg4?
Will non MS mpeg4 players be able to play mp42, mp43, mpg4 codecs?
when the mpeg4 spec is finalized will ms continue to distrubte the mp42,mp43, mpg4 codecs?
and yes when a monopoly bundles something (ie bundling wmp with the os and with ie) then it is being a bad monopoly.
next time try not to be such a troll ;^)

but what do i know
they invented PhotoShop then Adobe bought it from them
/Aldus merger
ummm You might be thinking of PhotoStyler which belonged to Aldus(who bought it from uLead) but died with the Adobe
wasn't photoshop based on Digital Darkroom by Silicon Beach? I dont recall...
it seems odd that you cite 10 year old software as uLead's reference.
Score:3, Funny
surprising that some of the 7 people who have actually seen seaquest and therefore get the joke are reading slashdot.
wait, no, i guess it isn't very surprising... is it?
Count the first 50 people you see out your window and ask your self if they are a fair represention of the population of your country/continent/ planet?
for the slower of you the answer is no.
