  1. Built one. on Building a Linux Virtual Server · · Score: 5, Insightful

Great for http. Bad for nfs and smb/cifs.

I'm glad somebody brought that up!

  3. Re:gigabit ethernet likely overkill on Renderfarm Setup Tips? · · Score: 2, Informative

3D rendering is proc intensive. 2D composite work (Shake, Digital Fusion, Nuke, etc) is NETWORK I/O intensive. You must have gigE at least from the main background plate server and shared element server. The pipe that drops off the final product is usually sending (HD proxies for internal review) and receiving (final output frames) so it's best to have that gigE too.

  4. Cycling in exhaust fumes? on Bicycling Science, Third Edition · · Score: 1

Does the book have any info on whether cycling in traffic is actually detrimental to your health or not? I honestly want to ride to work, but unless someone has come up with a small oxygen tank and mask I think the damage to my lungs is greater than the benefits of the exercise. Does anyone who's read the book know if there's anything about this in the book?

2? other sequals? AFAIK, there is only Conan The Destroyer, which we should pretend never existed. GAG. Are you thinking of RED SONJA, where Arnie plays Prince SomeBody-or-Other, a thinly disquised Conan clone?

  6. Los Angeles/Burbank area on Great Surplus Stores? · · Score: 1

They've moved down the street and I havn't been there since, but JOE FACTOR SALES was surplus heaven. Less than a few miles from the SkunkWorks and a short hop to JPL, they had the best assortment of stuff to build even more stuff with. Need a radar control station from the 50's era? They got 'em! No online presence, but a google search will find them.

  7. Mine uses a Shuttle FV24! on Mini PC in an Actual Lunchbox · · Score: 2

I really wanted the FireWire. Gigaherz, gigaram, duel boots between Red Hat and Age of Kings. Mine is a standard issue American size lunchbox (7x9x4) and it's a Yellow Submarine lunchbox. Thaks to some fancy stickers that come with Red Hat, all The Beatles are wearing Red Hats! Default boot is monitorless, right into mpg123 for the car. Normal IDE Disk too. Next version will have SlimDVD as well. Love those Shuttle boards!

  8. Re:Computers and Appliances on Interfaces For The Handicapped? · · Score: 1

Actually, the lead pipe thing wasn't so bad. The hard spring water they piped down calcified (just like it does in your house without a softener). This calcification added a layer of protection which kept the lead from bleeding through. Of course, there's no accounting for the fact they used to sprinkle lead powder on their food just for the buzz.
