  3. Stop the press !! on European Libraries Counter Google Digitisation · · Score: 1

    I don't catch the point in turning this fact into some sort of international French vs English cultural war. Even, if some people in France make some sort of anti-American statements (as the French always do anyway, you noticed that, didn't you ? ;-), it won't harm google.com in any manner, nor it will prevent them from digitasing the entire universe (even French litterature) as long as they have enough storage... U better leave this kind of subject to cheap tabloids or Fox News.

  4. what's the deal here ? on Abusing the GPL? · · Score: 1

    The goal of the GPL is that the work of the community can't be *stolen* for private business. It promotes a fair way of increasing global computer skills and knowledge through the forced sharing of source code (the preferred form for human beings).If you integrate GPL source code in your software, then your software is GPL as soon as you decide to distribute it : that's the deal !
    If the company's project is to be sold, therefore distributed, along with GPL material in it then the entire source of the project is GPL... any smart customer will handle back the source code to the GPL community. If the business plan of the company is about selling thousands of expensive licenses, they'll have troubles to sell more than one I bet...
    The problem with obfuscating an existing source code has only to do with authorship if the original license remains unchanged... but who
    cares about the author as long as the source code is useful and available ? ;-)
    Of course, on the other hand, if they change the licensing terms, I'm sure the FSF will be glad to unleash an army of lawyers to torn that unlawful company to pieces, and burn their houses, kill their dogs, their familly, their friends... :-)

  5. So slowwwww.... Zzzz... on Clearcase vs. CVS? · · Score: 1

    I'm currently working on a big project for Air Trafic Control in France and we're using clearcase. VOB space resides on an enormous DEC Alpha-Server with plenty of RAM, plenty of disk and is accessed through a fast LAN. We compile and
    link on separate hosts mounting the views with the
    MVFS feature : a network filesystem crossed with a version controlling system. It's quite funny since you can access versionned files just like regular unix files but it can cost a lot !!!

    Here are some performance measurements for a medium size file written in C...

    1) clearcase view:

    real 2m29.403s
    user 0m10.630s
    sys 0m25.653s

    => cpu = 36.283s / wait = 113.120s

    2) Local partition:

    real 0m13.522s
    user 0m8.911s
    sys 0m3.391s

    => cpu = 12.302s / wait = 1.220s

    Running uptime on the VOB server and the compiling
    host reveals that the compiling host is often idle, waiting for the overbusy server (cpu 100%) to complete VOB requests...

    Be idle with clearcase !

    It means that in a near future, some people will be paid $1/day to build millions of Crusoe. It's better than earning $0.5/day to build billions of Nike shoes, no ?
