  1. Alternative suggestion on The NSFW HTML Attribute · · Score: 1

I'd like an "obfuscated" tag, which the browser only displayed if the user specifically asks them to. This could then be used to wrap spoilers, NSFW material and anything else that users might might want a choice over whether they want to see.

You don't have to ban an entire server to ban one person.

I have an OpenID - it's http://andrewducker.livejournal.com/ - if your site supported OpenID you could choose to whitelist that ID, and allow me to comment unscreened. You wouldn't have to also whitelist http://cheezygrrl76.livejournal.com/ - they're a separate ID hosted on the same server.

  3. Reposting my comment on Joel's forums on You Call This Agile? · · Score: 2, Insightful

He's not saying "We won't do it." - he's saying "The coder should carry on with their job until a proper decision is made as to whether the context switch is worth it." - he clearly says that the decision as to whether to change what the developer is doing is passed over to the Project Manager to make.

And that sounds right to me. You don't context switch based on getting an email, and you make sure that project managers understand the implications of what they're asking for before you start working on it.

  4. Re:Service Oriented Architecture on No More Coding From Scratch? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The promise of SOA is, sadly, not terribly accurate.

Services change over time, new projects need extra bits of information, changes regulations mean that input that was allowed no longer is, etc. And you either end up with 300 different versions of each business service, so that older clients can still talk to their version of the service, or you have to update the clients whenever the server versions change.

They're still useful - we use them a lot where I work, but they aren't a silver bullet.

YouTube's been around for just over a year and already we're looking for its killer? Couldn't we just want YouTube to be improved a bit rather than migrating en masse from site to site every 15 minutes?

Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Nope, you need it for anything that's being calculated on their machine - including other objects being moved around, other people's movements if affected by gravity, etc.

Now, most of that may then be recalculated by the server and resent, but that's going to lead to lots of resynching and things jumping about if you're not very careful.

  12. Re:Why not go procedural? on John Carmack Discuss Mega Texturing · · Score: 1

But if you're calculating it you either need something that's so simple to calculate that even slow machines will calculate it quickly enough to match with the fast ones, or you're going to have different results for different users from the physics engine in multiplayer

Either case sounds bad to me.

  14. Re:Why not go procedural? on John Carmack Discuss Mega Texturing · · Score: 1

Procedurally generated stuff is fine for graphics, but when it comes to interaction between players and the world you want everyone to have the same experience, otherwise multiplayer becomes a synchronisation minefield.

Which means that you'd need to lock everyone down to a lowest-common-denominator level of generated world, to ensure that all machines could handle it in the time you had.

I also suspect that games designers want more control over the way things look than procedural effects would give them. If they want a particular curve/angle then they want to be able to go in and touch it up by hand, not play with procedural effects until they get something that's close to it.
