Yes, in principle communism is supposed to be a utopian society. Except the founders of communism forgot one little important point that basically destroys there nice little concept. People are "thinkers". In other words, we are not mindless robots who live are lives out on this earth eating, sleeping and producing (some of us do, of course). The other related point to this is that we do not live in a perfect world. Its basically every man for himself or in Darwinian terms "survival of the fittest". That is why capitalism has been so successful and why it has become the prominant societal feature of the 20th and 21st century. Communists societies will ultimately break down not because it isn't a good idea but because human nature will not support it. Lets think about it for a minute... what is the point of working hard or getting good grades if you are never rewarded for it. Human nature is such that we are all very selfish, if it doesn't directly profit us then we don't usually do it, its as simple as that.

The signal the received is probably nothing but we cannot give up hope. For all we know it could be a Martian sandstorm which is obliterating the normally faint signal that we would be getting from the lander. Only time will tell. Also with the increased Solar activity the noise floor that must be exceeded to communicate with the lander is making things even more difficult. I say only time will tell.

I use this space to point out that this price from joker.com only applies if you provide your own primary and secondary DNS. If you happen to have your own DNS I say by all means use joker.com to register your domains, that is what I would do.

The look is not what I would call "retro" its more like "Fortune 500 exec" if you ask me. Not to say that retro doesn't look good. I think retro is good up to the point that we take what was good from the past and leave the rest where it belongs, in the past. Wood has always had an appeal to the classier and wealthy or at least has that image. I mean would you want to put vinyl banasters in your 2.5 million dollar mansion? Of course not, it would look "cheap". Of course the look can always be overdone. Take the case of the '70s station wagons with their retro (simulated) wood panels. It no wonder that never caught on it was fake to begin with.
This is switching topics a little. But what I would do with the Palm Pilot is put on of those rubber inserts over it to make it more shock resistant. Something like the design of the Fluke Multimeters Holster.

Actually your idea of a lego palm would be really cool. But what would be even cooler is if the lego palm had an interface so it could interact with the lego motors and other gizmo's (something like the Lego Mindstorm set, except the interface would be your Palm Pilot instead of your PC). I guess I'm just a lego freak but I think this idea has some merit. I don't currently own a palm pilot but I think if it had this additional feature I could then justify the high price and actually purchase one. Of course my wife would still kill me. The only down side is the kids my want to use it more than me and we all know that palm pilots and kids don't mix. (They probably do but most paranoid palm pilot users would disagree.) Anyhow I like the lego idea, somebody needs to do something with it.

Have you noticed lately (actually its been going on since the 60's) the over-proliferation of plastic. Its kind of nice to break up the monotony of life with wood or in some cases just cold hard steel. What really irks me is the look of new cars and trucks where the interior is almost 100% plastic. What happened to the good old rugged Ford's with there steel dashboards and rugged appearance. I mean the trimmin on my new Ford is already starting to fall apart after only a couple of years. Compared with my Grandpa's '78 it looks like a toy.
I think the retro look is nice and in many cases more rugged and functional. I'm sick of these cheap plastic cases that fall apart after a month or two. Take my pager for instance. I'm a pretty physical person so at least once a day I ding the thing into something. Now if it had a tough nylon or metal shell it would be fine but the thing is already starting to come apart at the seams.
You would think with all the advances in material science corporate america would utilize them more.

Do you notice how most of these court battles are over some encryption technology or between Microsoft and some other company or in this case the DOJ. You will hardly ever find a court case involving Linux. Why is that?
Nathaniel P. Wilkerson NPS Internet Solutions, LLC
Your right Linux is hardly the be all and end all of OS's. We run our servers on FreeBSD since we found that it is even more stable than Linux and is also more scalable for industrial applications, such as database admin and even for serving up web pages. When it comes to a really serious OS I think Linux still has a way to go yet. Linux tends to get a lot of the spotlight but it is just another version of Unix. Its basically a marketing thing. You get the name out then everyone starts talking about it which gives it even more publicity and pretty soon the whole thing snowballs into a huge "monopoly" for lack of a better word. Windows is a prime example, just too bad it sucks so bad.

It doesn't surprise me that Linux is getting into as many far-reaching industries as it is. Computers are practically involved in everything today, from driving your car to ordering a pizza. Everyone of these computers needs some form of operating system that is fast, efficient, and can be easily configured or optimized for the task at hand. Linux fits all of these bills! I think we've only began to see the beginning of the proliferation of Linux into mainstream applications and business. Forget about Jini and Microsoft CE. They are both things of the past. Linux's power comes from its open source model which makes it readily available to every developer out there. I wouldn't be surprised if we see such applications as MP3 players for cars which run on Linux, or even home theater systems that utilize the power of Linux. We've only seen the tip of the iceberg. I mean look at the new processor Crusoe. Combine the speed and power saving features of this processor with the efficiency and stability of Linux and you have a winning combination. Say good-bye to "WinTel". Thats just my two-cents on the matter.

The issue with the hubble space telescope was the diffractive index of the multiple lenses. Unfortunately, some over zealous engineer forgot to take into account the relative pressure differences that would exist in space. Fortunately, the pressure miscalculation was not major problem but it did create a slight bulge or abberehation of the main lense of the hubble. New lenses were constructed to account for this and then subsequently replaced. Its not always easy to get it right the first time. That is why the multiple maintenance trips to fix the Hubble. New stabilizing gyros were added later on as an afterthought. Sure the Hubble was working "okay" but not up to par as had been envisioned when the project was first started. As you can see from the crisp clean pictures the Hubble has not only been fixed but improved as well. I say we give a NASA an overdue round of applause for sticking it out to the end.

Take a valium or something. Better yet hop on one of those websites with Natalie Portman (why I don't know, but it seems to be a fad here at/.) and chill out for awhile. No one is spamming here we are just trying to give our honest input. Learn to respect the opinions of others and maybe you will get some respect as well. Would you say something like this to your grandmother or your boss?? Let's try to make slashdot a better site, with less vulgarity and hate. I get embarrassed to come to this site when messages like this are present. Sometimes my wife likes to read over my shoulder, so cool it down a notch. Thank-you.

As far as Free ISP's go I would recommend Freewwweb.com I've been using them for over a year now at home and they haven't failed me yet. No charge, no stupid banner to steal your bandwidth, and a fast 56k connection. Free ISP's are old news, they're a dime-a-dozen anymore.

I never said we had the best price world wide just the best price in United States. Also these other places like Joker.com make you provide your own DNS information. How many people have a couple of nameservers just laying around connected to the internet 24x7. Yes you can buy in bulk, but then how many end users need 100 domain names, and to be approved for the bulk rate you have to be a web host, ISP or some other large corporation. I know because we are signing up right now with Tucows/OpenSRS so we can offer our customers a $30 domain name registration. Trust me I know what's out there 'cause its my business to. I'm not trying to take anyone for a ride, if thats what you're implying. I'm simply trying to explain that there are options out there whether you go with my company or not. I'm just sick and tired of Network Solutions screwing everyone over.

If I see one more article on Slashdot about some company sueing another company for some ridiculous, insignificant piece of technology... I swear I will...
I suppose a person has a right to believe whatever they want to. I take the Bible pretty much at face value, I mean there are probably some things that have been altered over the ages but I don't believe it to be simply the result of someone's overly vivid imagination. Let's face it the prophecies within the bible are real. Many have already taken place (ie. the holocaust). Most slashdotter's are probably laughing their a**** off right now but you have to read the writing on the wall as I see it. I'm not a doomsdayer or anything but I think it is wise to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Isn't there somewhere in Revelations that it prophecies of the Moon turning to Blood or something to this effect. Correct me if I am wrong. Makes you begin to wonder doesn't it?
What about age of empires or even the new Age of Kings game. That would really interest me. I'm not much for the first person shooters, they're all the same.
