  1. Building Standards on Canada May Name High-Speed Access "Essential" · · Score: 2

I agree totally however there is a slight problem with all of this. That problem is the rapid changing technology. With standard house wiring the basic underlying technology really hasn't changed a whole lot in 50 years. We still run AC 120/240 Volt copper wires throughout our houses and businesses. Insulation for the copper wires have improved however the technology itself hasn't changed. The problem with wiring a new house with CAT5 cable is that in 5 years or less it will probably not meet the current specs for high speed access, so the question is even if there were some sort of building code what would it be, it would probably change at least every year. One year it would be CAT5 and the next Fibre Optic. The techonology is moving to quickly to standardize it, maybe in 15 years it will reach a plateau but I really doubt it.

IBM's little program won't go anywhere I would guess. People hate to pay their hard earned money to these large corporations for a service that already exists.

Seriously, though I think Gore did has some influence in helping making the internet what it is today but I think perhaps he takes a little too much credit for it just like him and Clinton taking credit for our booming economy. The great economy is a result of many more factors than one little president and his immediate staff. I think we can thank Alan Greenspan more than anybody and the internet itself for making this happen. Politicians don't always have as much influence as they would like to think. However, in the case os some such as Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan I think we would all agree that they were able to truly make changes in our world, the only think Clinton ever achieved is notariety.

I'm not exactly happy with either candidate at this point in the election but as Ross Perot said on CNN Larry King Live, "It's now come down to who is the better of the two horses". Since I"m sick of Clinton and all his lying etc... I think I'll give the Republicans a chance this time...

But I wouldn't concern myself too much with this generation since they probably aren't the ones recording shows with their VCRs anyway. Lets face it the people the industry is concerned about are the younger generation who are willing to try a few things, unfortunately this same generation is also more than willing to try a simple hack if give that option. The only reason why keyboards work so well is that it is a trained skill that is aquired through practice and is kind of like swimming or driving your car, it just comes naturally after a while. This doesn't mean that it is necessarily the most efficient method of transfering our thoughts to a computer however. Right now it is definetly the most widely accepted for of communication with eletronic devices, but I think we are being a little narrow minded here. Take for instance the mouse, if you had explained the idea to someone back in the early days of computers they would have rejected the idea because it is too clunky, sort of like us imagining using a 3D interface.
I think we need to be really openminded and give every concept a try. You never know what might just be around the corner. I mean, as I type this message I find myself dictating the message in my head as I type it. The bottleneck here is how fast my fingers can move not how fast I can think. I can think up new sentences at least 5 times faster than I can type and my typing is at least 45wpm or better. What we need here is a way to translate our thoughts into characters on a screen. I reject the voice recognition schemes since like others have mentioned it would quickly make anyone hoarse.
Somehow their needs to be an efficient way of moving are thoughts directly into the ones and zeros of the computer. One idea of mine is to eliminate the mouse by using some sort of retinal scanner which can track what we are looking at on the screen then when we want to click on something we simply blink. This idea may have some merit, especially for web browsing.

If your product stinks and they give it a bad review then you probably don't belong in the business anyway. I don't see anything wrong with giving out free software to the press and software evaluators, it is unbiased evaluation and advertising.

And we thought the rush for the dotcoms was bad... Now that everyone is more aware of the potential worth of domain names the mad rush to grab up names is going to be overwhelming. I'm interested to see exactly how the fair/legal way to allow registration of then new TLDs is going to proceed.

We already have a bunch of big brokers calling every week asking when they can start to "pre-register" names from the new TLDs. This is absolutely insane if you ask me. I sure hope ICANN and the accredited registrars can work out a good plan otherwise all heck is going to break loose.

One way to possibly handle this is only allow registrants of a particular name the ability to register the same name in the new TLDs and then for unregistered names in the .com, .net and .org allow a free for all.

That way we would stop, Joe Blow from registering yahoo.shop but if he comes up with a new domain like joeblowiscool.com he can register whatever he likes.

There is one basic flaw with bio-metric security systems. Even though they seem like a good idea in principle the transmission of the bio-metric information across any network or piece of hardware can always be intercepted by a third party and then simply be re-transmitted to spoof the real user. Ultimately, any bio-metrics gets transmitted into a stream of ones and zeros which can be recorded and then used by a malicous third party. More work is needed in this area to come up with better authentication schemes.

Parents get a clue... the best way to control your kids is keep them BUSY. Get them involved in different clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities. Trust me it is much more healthy for a kid to be involved in these sorts of social activities than to be cooped up in front of a computer all day. Granted some of us like to sit in front of a computer all day, but parents should be smart enough to force their kids to get involved in other things at least until the kid is of age and can make decisions for themselves.
