    Simon didnt want to give away (part of) the solution. With some encryption systems only a few chars of plaintext will be massively helpful.

    Is the book any good? I bought his `Fermats last theorem` book and thought it was a bit crap. I really liked it for a little while, then i realised that he didnt understand the maths and wasnt going to give more than vague hints at what they were trying to solve... i`ve pretty much given up with (non fiction) books now when theres so much stuff on the net - would i miss anything by not getting this one?

    Also, it seems a little unfair that genetic stuff is being tested but not lifestyle choices. Someone who smokes 80 cigs a day could potentially have lower insurance premiums than someone who is perfectly healthy but who is at risk from something later on in life.

    I`m sure you could get anonymous gps boxes, no-one would know who was going where until you reported it stolen. End of (surveillance) problem.

    On a related note, i think it`ll be great when gps boxes are a few pounds/dollars. I`d stick one inside my tv, video, computer etc.

    I imagine it`ll be a lot more fun to go and `recover` your stolen property yourself, or with a few friends... :)

    Yeah, theres a (under resourced, in my view) National Health Service, so its not like in the states where you dont get any treatment if your poor.
    But we have strange things like insurance companies charging you more if you`ve had an aids test, regardless of the result - the fact you`ve had one apparantly means you must be at risk! So i`m sure they`ll do what the hell they want!

    The fact the government is saying you dont have to disclose now doesnt mean you never will. There is nothing to stop insurance companies asking you this time next week.

    whats the point of having IMHO when you dont use it. Its just an opinion. I prefer white on black, as it means theres no flashing monitor to give me a headache!

    I dont have the book. Is there a page on the net with the actual questions? The pdf file by the winning team mentions that they ocr`d it - does that exist anywhere?

    Would you rather not use headphones or a standard hands-free kit?

    In which way is this an advance? Sounds like a pretty stupid idea to me. I`m sure if this system had been invented first, the creation of a way of NOT using your finger would be seen as an advance!

    Are you telling me the entire legal industry (police, courts etc) will just ignore evidence of crimes just because its 6 months and one day old?

    They knew which would die. The question was whether or not to let them both die.

    It seemed strange to me to bring them to England, then complain when the judgement went the obvious way - to save one of them. What was the alternative? To let them both die? Why bring them to a hospital in England for that? They could have both died where they were.

    Clue: The parents are religious.

    The idea that a company, using a law only valid in America, will try and force any hardware manufacturers outside of America to implement something against their will is just laughable.

    Those companies want to produce their own soundcards with said mechanisms are welcome to do so, and i`m sure they`ll be able to sell them cheaply and get hassle from the monopolies commision etc if they do. I dont see any other way. They can un-invent other formats, its just not going to happen.

    Will it have to work through analog conversions? I`m sure cutting out a very thin band of frequencies would be one way of id`ing a protected track. Thats what an earlier proposal for copy-protecting suggested. Cant remember the frequencies offhand, but you could hear the difference. The idea was that so could the DAT recorders of the time, and they`d refuse to record the incoming signal.

    i think they think they can produce players with play music securely...dont think they`ve seen the Creative recorder, in `what-i-hear` mode where it just wav`s (to coin a verb) whatever is going out the back...
