The laissez-faire capitalism has given the U.S. unpressidented economic growth for the past 100 years. In 1900, the largest economy in the world was Argentina(sp?). Where are they today? No clue, but definately not in the top ten. Marxist/Socialist economic policy does not work.
In Europe, while they might have one standard for such things as mobile phones(thanks to the government), they also have 10%+ unemployment(also thanks to the government). I know France is hovering around 11% right now. I'd rather have a job an fight with standards than be unemployed and know that my cellular phone network is "standard"

First, Lets define what edge is. It can be one of three things. Development of these gadgets, the marketing of these gadgets, or the inovation that happens after the gadgets reach the the market.
The U.S. hasn't developed or invented a whole lot in the past 20 years (there are exceptions). The reason that we generate so much wealth is that we can inovate existing products and market them effectively.
Let them create the stuff and send it to the U.S. I'll make money off of someone elses invention anyday!
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but the big three phone makers are Nokia, Ericson, and Motorola. They all sell there phones in the U.S. but who sells the service? THAT is where the money is, in the service, not in the hardware. We all know that hardware is cheap. Also, who is doing the major development for Wireless Applications? I bet if you looked into it you'd find American owned companies pouring in the investment dollars and reasearch.
The problem with space exploration is that we value human life too much. How many thousands of sailors died on the trip from Europe to the new world? (please understand, I do value human life, I just think sacrifices for mankind should not be in vain. Exploration is not a vain purpose.)
To stay on topic over 36,000 people die of gunshot wounds in the U.S. every year. We CAN do something about that (but we don't). Yet one death for exploration purposes is a waste?
Joe Stalin (Russian Dictator WWII) said this once, "a million men deaths is a statistic, one mans death is a tragedy" While I'm not a fan of Stalin by any means, he was killed more people than Hitler , that quote (which may not be word for word) i think sums up our preception of one person dying. You think of all the media attention in the recent school shotings, yet 10 people under the age of 18 die every day from guns in america. We don't report them on national news. (this was posted on cnn in the last 2-3 weeks)
Governments didn't organize the exploration of the new world 500 years ago, it was business/entrapeneurs (sp?), with government help. If businesses begin to finance exporation again then we will make progress. If not, then by the time I'm 100 (78 years from now) we will probably only have landed enough probes on Mars to be counted on by my then frail two hands. Lets go private people.

When did people found out that smoking caused lung cancer and other ailments? 30 Years ago? Last I check there were record profits for tobaco companies.
If cell phones are found to be harmful I figure that consumers will just file a few class actions suits against cell phone makers (which are also posting record proffits) to make up for damages. They will claim something about "But you knew the risks....etc" and get some Jury to award them $145 Billion or so. Just because they had to talk to their boyfriend at THAT instant......(sorry, I'm getting off topic)
Is there a side affect? Probably, maybe, who knows. (There is a side effect to everything, the question is whether it will have more damaging effects or more positive effects.) Do we care enough to stop using cell phones until we have further scientific proof? Yeah Right. Will we continue using them if proof comes? Of course.
BTW-what does this have to do with slashdot? or is it a slow news day and there is nothing else to talk about here?
While the US economy is at it's strongest point ever, with 4% unemployment, France and most of europe continue to hover around 10%? Can you imagine 1 in 10 people collecting unemployment? Why? Here's my guess, their socialist governments and extremely high taxes.
And I've heard that their welfare pays over $10 and hour (after exchange rates). And remember the US dollar is much stronger than foriegn currencies. If it ever weakens that number will be much higher.
Why is there a tariff on cheese? Unfortunately that is not a economic decision (all tariffs are bad to the global economy, they normally hurt the poor while protecting the rich) that is a political desicion, with the cheese farmer being caught in the middle.

EU Web Tax Proposed

NH has no sales tax. Someone needs to do more research. That's three states now, maybe more!
Taxes are mostly elastic. Under most circumstances if you raise them your revenue will decrease and if you lower them your revenue will increase. I could go into the economic and basic math but I won't. Yes, states would increase sales tax revenue, but stores would not make as much money and income tax revenue would decrease. I'll bet that if the math was done taxing the internet would be the worse thing for government revenue.
If nothing else it will create a political nightmare.
I don't understand the EU and I never will. They see our economy booming from the Regan tax cuts and a tax free internet, yet they do just the opposite. Their economy still isn't as hot as ours, so they have even more to loose. They also raised interest rates today. Now, that will strengthen their currency, making our goods cheaper, and TAX FREE! (sorry for pointing out the obvious) This won't throw them into a recession, but it will cut into revenue. To bad for them.
The US used to be that way, government regulated monopolies, but deregulation in the 90's has lead to some competition, with more coming in the future. With freedom comes risk, is the possibility of lower cable bills and better service greater than the possibility of abuse? Well we'll never know unless we try.
People forget that there is nothing legally wrong with a monopoly in the US. The problem arrises when corporations abuse monopoly power (i.e. Microsoft) and uses it to inhibit competition, fix prices, or drive someone out of business.
I have still yet to be shown any "proof" that AT&T is moving towards this. Mergers happen on a daily basis and there is always someone crying wolf about Monopolies when big business merges.
Yes, you can bring them up on Unix, but Windows will be around for a long time. Face it, it's the future (with thousands of errors). People love GUI, even Linux has it's own. The average user does not want to learn C, they just want e-mail and web surfing. To back up this statement, look at statistics of graduating computer science majors. You will see since a peak in 87-88, it has steadily declined. Why do you think we make so much money? Major labor shortage.
I call myself a Christian. And I see hundreds of other so called "Christians" everyday cut people off, speed agressively, yell at waitresses because of this or that. They show no love. Quite often I am ashamed to call myself Christian because I don't want to be associated with these people. How do you justify your 4 assumptions? Since when is working on the Sabbath a sin? Question, what day is Sabbath? You are calling upon the letter of the law, not the spirit of the law. Could it be that God was trying to tell us to make sure we take a day off every week to rest, relax and enjoy ourselves? The bible also says that women shouldn't speak or sing in church. Oh, and about middle america, did you know that the "Bible belt" has the HIGHEST divorce rate in the nation? (I'm trying to find the story, cnn.com posted it last fall I think) Can you explain that one? Oh, and please tell me again why I have to attend church twice a week?
If we had began free trade with Cuba in the 1960's (instead of invading) Castro's government would have fallen very quickly or reform would have been made. American consumer goods would have flooded the cuban market and they would not have put up with a dictator like Castro for very long. Now Cuba is small and only 90 miles from the U.S. with a population of 8M (I think) China is over 5000 miles away with a population of 1.1B, and growing. While free trade will have some impact, it will be a while before we see possitive results.
How could that be a level 4 comment! First, if you know your history, France tried to stand up to Germany, but Belgium and Holland refused to allow French troops in their countries because they didn't want to get caught between a Franco-German conflict. Boy were they wrong. It's not France's fault for not having the technical weapons that the Germans had. Man for Man (numbers that counted in WWI) the French had a larger army than Germany.
What about all the countries that did not spend vast quanities of money and resources and still didn't have a problem? No 3rd world country had the resources that the U.S. had at their disposal yet none of them reported major problems. How do you explain that?
The only widspread bug that I remember hearing about was in the State of Maine where 2000 cars were being registered as "horseless-carriages".
