And the device drivers are only as reliable as the hardware. Sorry to say but PC's have little to none in the way of fault detection other than a few paltry parity bits sprinkled about it. As long as Linux is on PC (as built) it can never be reliable.
Fact is, unix and it's funny little varients are still no match for MVS and big irons reliability. They're toys in comparision. The Suits know this... and you don't.
err, ain't got nuthin to do with yer tux-dude. like it's superior, and stuff.
AS YOU CAN SEE, NUTTY INDUSTRIES PERFORMS SAFE, CLEAN, EFFICIENT PROCESSING!! WE TAKE HARMFUL NATURALLY OCCURING PETROCHEMICALS AND CONVERT THEM INTO USEFUL INDUSTRIAL LUBRICANTS!!! THE ONLY BYPRODUCT IS A HARMLESS BLUE POLYMER WHICH GIVES THE OCEAN ITS DISTINCTIVE COLOR AND ODOR!!!!!
These are bad 'wannabe' cases, except for the penguin one... I have no idea what that's trying to be.. Confidentially I'm hiding all my cases behind some nice hand sanded, veneered, and stained finish plywood. Or maybe just spray paint em all bright yellow!:)
Great, now the tools vendors are distracted from their main business (the one we pay for) of delivering _reliable_ tools. Instead they're off chasing yet another cheap platform.
Nothing wrong with those objectives, actually sounds like a good idea when you put it that way.
As for huge bashes... it is a great machine, and considering SGI's design and product introduction cycles, they are due for a big change sometime very soon. The VisualPC is the (hopefully) little splash.

>That would discredit Linux once and for all!
Indeed it would! UP WITH IRIX!
I would like to see the "Pointy Haired Boss"
introduce linux into the office.

I HAVE AN EXTRA SANDWICH AND YOU MAY HAVE IT!!! BUT ONLY IF YOU PROMISE NOT TO WEAR IT, TOO!!!
SORRY OLD BEAN!! THIS WAS NOT MY IDEA!!!!
Indicative!
I have enjoyed Blender for over a year now,
and I'm looking forward to purchasing the
complete blender when it's available, and
acessories.
Sometimes it's about eating the cereal,
not the free inside the box that counts.
bananas?!?!? what about typewriters?!?
How many volumes of Shakespeare will be written
that day?
I WISH FOR NUTTYX 2.2!

Heh, I bought two manuals, one for my brother :)
and four T shirts. And if/when blender cost money
I'll buy that too.
Are you sure? I could be an Anonymous Coward
with a name.....
YES!

nope, I've spent about 200 bucks on opportunity cost tonight for a free OS.
As much as I agree, I would prefer Hurd over
Linux anyday.
I suppose SGI, IBM, and so on, are making a
:)
benevolent contribution to the self proclaimed
"linux community"?
Heh. They're gonna make a buck off of free
software. OpenSource == OpenWallet
>Until Linux has a good 3D package
Actually Linux has nothing, GNU/Linux is your target. And it's not the packages but the
inadaquate 3D hardware support by Mesa (GPL heh).
Blender is impressive on SGI's running IRIX.
ah... actually it's not meant for that purpose.
Blender works best in a constructive capacity.
>and I can get faster support from emailing a >mailing list or IRC
That's true.. there's always some 15 year old
kid waiting to help in an emergency..
I loved TOPS-20 more... even VMS or MVS for that matter. Unix is ... just ok.

I'll call Synopsys Today!
At least Pournelle has a _constructive_ attitude.
