Your thanks is best appreciated by buying the products and services, enabled by the embracing of OpenSource. The "Thanks-you's" will go directly to all the people being layed off to make it all happen.
I see, somehow I got the idea that unix was part of the so called weapons system device software or so (I haven't the military terminology:) rather than part of the human interface, or as you describe it above.
I would have thought that military applications were similar to commercial aviation systems, and space missions, where fault tolerance techniques like triple modular redundancy, and defensive programming are deployed to aid in controlling a degraded vehicle or subsystem in the presence of faults. On the other hand, if you're just gonna get blown up anyway, I suppose it doesn't matter what OS you run. Or does it?
Well he should change it. The new icon is for these types of products.
Of course it seems SGI can't make up it's mind for any great period of time anymore, perhaps they'll change the logo back, in another back pedaling attempt to appear in control.
By MY measure I am a bigger SGI fan than you. By MY measure the new logo is appropiate for Intel/Linux Boosters. By MY measure the cube is for the pre-new logo machines (excluding the VPC, of course) So I should be commenting here, and I do.
Btw: any SGI fan would know that 'SkyWriter' is the name of such a machine that is appropriate for the cube logo, and as such, rightly bears it proudly.
As long as SGI is giving products away, it would be nice to see some hobbiest initiatives for older MIPS machines, such as IRIX 5.3 and performer 2.0 at least. Even along the lines of DEC's OpenVMS hobbiest licensing for current products.
SGI is adding VALUE to linux, not just more software, like other offerings. Return the value to loyal customers, and enthusiast too!
I agree with the end note of the article.. what comes next? Linux is "Me Too Technology" unix has been done to death... if you think you have all this "vast and superior talent" why not do something really new, rather than hash over the same problems that has been solved by commercial unixes.
Heh, get a job... for my competitors.
>heck it runs SLASHDOT.
It can't possibly get any slower....
What a maroon.
>SGI 3D innovation is pretty piss poor when you look at the facts

drivel

Lost in space was better.

Dave, thanks for updating your "Buying an
:)
SGI system FAQ" recently!
Your page sent me on my twisted and tourtured
way!
Even!
MMMMOooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
Sky!
If those IRIX people have stuck around....
It's a slap in the face when your work
is being replaced by externaly developed
software because its 'better'.
>Oh, willyoupleaseshutup!?
gosh that got my attention.
>This would you prefer?
I would prefer SGI did what I liked best,

Well, after 20 years in the computer industry I
can tell you "pretty damn quick" aint quick
enough sometimes.

Thank you!
And all slashdoter's are worried about is
the IRIX source code. You people are sad.
Oh yeah:
"this logo's for you!"
wrong logo
Please use the new logo, it's for you!
I see, somehow I got the idea that unix was :) rather than part of the human

you run. Or does it?
>Perhaps you have not read their business plan?
>Take a look. This is yet one step of a long, >thoughtfully laid out path.
Now that's silly, of course you think it's
going to look good. Publicly disclosed
business plans are PR, sale, and marketing.
Well he should change it. The new icon is for these types of products.

Servers, Graphics, Insight! heh!

You still have the wrong logo.
The 'sgi' one is for the new
silicon graphics.
I guess no one wants all that 'mathy stuff' anymore. Serious computing is at an end.
IRIX 6.2 with IDO:
sgi3 10# apropos matrix | wc
1006 24627 153747
sgi3 11# apropos eigen | wc
244 6123 42143
Redhat 5.2:
stupidpc:~# apropos matrix
matrix: nothing appropriate
stupidpc:~# apropos eigen
eigen: nothing appropriate
But why reinvent the wheel?
When all you need is the valve stem....
>Has always been available in linux...with scsi or >ide.
That doesn't mean it ever worked reliably.
The new logo was designed to appeal to SGI's new
customers, ie PC NT users (and soon linux too,
as if there's a difference).
The cubes day has passed, but the old machines
live on.
As long as SGI is giving products away,
it would be nice to see some hobbiest
initiatives for older MIPS machines, such as

change the logo will ya?
Intel/NT/Linux killed the cube.
Change the Silicon Graphics logo image already.

Heh, the patron saint of sea monkeys, lawn mowers,
and convenience stores.
