  1. Title says it all. on Ask Slashdot: Using Company Laptop For Personal Use · · Score: 1

"Using Company Laptop For Personal Use" Title tells you everything that is wrong with this question. "Company Laptop" - You dont own it... dont mess with it. "Personal Use" - Nope its not intended for personal use, its a tool given to you, so you can do your job. You wanna play games and surf the net? Buy a Tablet they go from $200-$800 depending on what you want. I would be really pissed off if a user did this. You think imaging the laptop etc.. is a perfect plan, but its not worth it, if things go wrong.

I upgraded to the 25/1 and they wanted $8 a month for rental, which is just over $106 a year with taxes. Buying the modem is $200. I bought the modem which will be cheaper in the long run.

Also if you do a bit of googling you can find instructions to take more control over the modem.

At the store they kept pushing me to install the software that comes with the CD and manage the modem that way.

    I dont think so.

Current Rogers Packages (costs per month)

$27.99 - 500 Kbps Download speed 256Kbps upload speed 2GB monthly Usage (Upload and download)

$35.99 - 3 Mbps Download speed 256Kbps upload speed 25GB monthly usage (upload and download)

$46.99 - 10 Mbps Download speed 512Kbps upload speed 60GB monthly usage (upload and download)

$99.99 - 50 Mbps Download speed 2Mbps upload speed 175GB monthly usage (upload and download)

Let me explain something to the un-initiated, those download speeds? are advertised as UP TO.
So if you sign up for the $69.99 package and can only get 17Mbps and you call support, you are
than told that is within the exceptable speed limit.
You tell me thats better than $29.99 for 100Mbps Fiber in Japan?

  5. Here is my 2 cents. on Which Linux For Non-Techie Windows Users? · · Score: 1

Ok here my take on this subject. The average person who is not a tech-geek-know-it-all Trusts the opinion of the tech-geek-know-it-all which is why they ask us what is the best way to go. Now lets look at whats happened since Windows XP.. Microsoft has decided to come up with last time I counted 7 different versions of Windows 7, and although there are so many versions, in the end are the different versions really that different? The Menus/Options bars etc is pretty much the same. So you can pick a version of Windows 7 depending on the budget and hardware and off you go. Now lets look at Linux, I've read through almost half of the comments posted here and I'm more confused from when I read this topic and I thought I knew a bit, and I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to Computers and Operating systems. The problem with Linux is, there may be 7 different versions (distros) or more, but they all look different and install different.. compared to all the versions of Windows 7 which in the end look very similar, and work similar. What the Linux Community needs to do is come up with a Unified Distro a sort of Linux Windows. A distro that when someone asks which Distro of Linux to use, you simply say USE THIS VERSION and be done with it. Everyone in here has named at least 4 different distros and thats according their tastes. Well a Non Linux User, doesnt know what flavour they will like... they expect an expert to tell them which flavour is the best. If Linux enthusiast want to convert people to Linux they need to come up with a Single Distro that you can simply recommend and would be the defacto standard. Sometimes too much choice is not a good thing, its like how people go into a sandwich shop and they see all these options on the menu but in the end they order the same thing they always do. I've installed Ubuntu, Red Had, KDE and even played around with Knoppix and in the end I didnt know which one to stick with, because I dont want to invest the time one one Distro to later find another Distro is better and I'd have to re-install etc.. Look at MAC OSX (I dont own any apple products), thats a good example of having not too many versions.

I think a suitable punishment would be for him to be sent back to he's original country, and have to re-submit paperwork to be allowed to come back. He got caught.. now imagine how many others who do this dont get caught... and endup getting a Job because their transcript shows that they have all A's which they dont deserve. Would you like this guy to do surgery on you, if he decides to become a doctor?? If we become too lenient to this type of abuse, the word gets out and others will try the same.

I'm a Rogers subscriber with the "Extreme" package which is just in name, not extreme at all.. the recent letter I got stated the following. "Extreme Plus Monthly Rate: $99.95 Speed: 18MBps Upload: 1Mbps Usage Allowance; 95GB Additional Usage Per GB: $1.25 Extreme Monthly Rate: $54.95 Speed: 10MBps Upload: 1Mbps Usage Allowance; 95GB Additional Usage Per GB: $1.50" With The extreme package I used to have a 110GB monthly allowance, they have decided to go a head and lower that limit... the Subject of the e-mail was "To Continue to meet your needs." How the hell is lowering my service package from what it used to be meeting my needs?? Who the hell wants to pay $99 a month to get the faster speed?? So they can reach their Monthly limit sooner?? To Icing on the top of the cake is the POP UP!!!. Yes now they Inject a Pop up on you're screen as you browse to show you that you are reaching the limit. I tried clicking on the disable option that they have but it does not work. So now every website I try to visit I get this annoying popup which slows down my browsing.
