  1. Government backdoor? on WMF Vulnerability is an Intentional Backdoor? · · Score: 5, Interesting

There was talk about the NSA/CIA having a close relationship with Microsoft and being able to exploit backdoors in Windows. This could have all been conspiracy theories, but the fact that this vulnerability existed throughout the Windows line kinda seems odd..

If this isn't a glaring example on why you should support open source, I don't know what is....

I can stop my life long search to find the perfect OS that allows me to delete information fom my HD! I wonder if this means I can finally remove Windows...

If you're running W2K, then chances are you WOULDN'T be trying to upgrade to XP Home edition. XP Professional is your only upgrade path, both realistically and literally (The CD won't let you upgrade).

From my personal experience, I like W2K (As my prefered workstation) but XP adds a really nice (somewhat) clean look to the Windows interface. I have noticed, however, that window redraw is a bit slower, which is a concern. (I'm using a GeForce2 GTS 32MB on a Dual PIII-600 w/ 1G RAM).

Features include built in CD recording, movie maker, 'Universal Plug 'n Play' support across the network, faster boot-up.. These are just features I've noticed, personally.

Oh, it also adds terminal server support to your workstation, which they now call 'Remote Desktop' (Same protocol, though. Ironically, your local screen gets locked out once someone connects to 'assist' you. Now instead of the technical support person on the other end of the phone being in the dark, the user is. :P .. Although one could argue that the user is already in the dark..) Enabling remote desktop support also enables multiple user support on your computer, so you can 'disconnect' from your 'session' and login as someone else, while your programs remain running. Users of Terminal Server/Services will be at home.

From my personal experience, it seems a bit slugish and has crashed quite a few times compared to W2K.

All in all, it's not a bad upgrade. It's a great upgrade if you had a chance to use Mac OS X 10.1 and wished you owned a Mac. :P

Wow. So they can automatically put stuff on your >computer that will disable software they don't >like, and potentially take away your ability to >play "Secure Content."

I'm no expert on this, however, I believe what they mean is that through this automated process, they may inadvertantly disable other software due to changes (incompatibles) in the codecs in question.

Of course, this would only cause applications that rely on Microsoft's codecs to fail.

Of course, seeing as I haven't read the EULA I could be wrong.
