Don't confuse "x86 processor" with "generic PC hardware from Fry's for $299."
As every other poster will write, Apple makes it's profits off of hardware. If AIM/PPC flounders, Apple may switch processor families. But they're not going to port to the generic box. They'll switch procs and go with a new, proprietary design around the new chip, and you'll still have to buy your box from Apple in order to run the Mac OS (Roman numeraled or otherwise).
Apple needs to control the entire user experience, and you don't get that by allowing every piece of shit box from Joe's Computer Dumpster/Shop to run your OS on suspect components with no control over design, quality or distribution.
If Apple switches to x86, it'll be for price/performance/availability reasons, not for compatibility. Apple might pick up the side benefit of easier/faster/better ports from sw written for x86, but I'll bet you a dozen Krispy Krem doughnuts that that won't be Jobs' primary motivation.
Well I haven't done all the collateral reading--I've just read the four books (Hobbit + LOTR), and this is my take on the Solo Frodo thing--hobbits have extraordinary constitution and incredibly ordinary ambitions. Key to keeping the Ring from falling into evil hands was keeping the Ring from hands that would become evil under its influence. nb Saruman and Boromir's lust, and Gandalf's refusal to take possession of the Ring. Every other wise and powerful character likewise refused to take custody, knowing that the temptation would be beyond their ability to resist. Frodo didn't have that problem. Anyway, that's my $0.0199999999 with a Pentium FP erratum.
Not only can you write new apps that access the full features of QT, you can even use Apple's old ones. I never deleted MoviePlayer 2.5 that shipped with QT 2.5. With it, I have full access to all the codecs (including Sorenson) for playback, save and export.
The only thing "Pro" about QT Pro is the player. The functionality's in the libs.
she throws on 5 pounds of makeup and winds up looking like a dirty whore.
I think about it this way--I want PMT, SMP, Protected Memory, and all the other buzzwords. I'd pay $99-$149 just to get it with the existing GUI (which I really like, BTW).
But Apple needs to generate some serious volume from the iMac consumer base to make enough money, so they iMacified it.
I'm not a big fan of Aqua the way it looks now, but if it enables Apple to ship my buzzword-enabled OS, then so be it!
So she puts on five pounds of makeup so that my brother will agree to take her out on the double date, and I get to go out with the cool sexy one who understands PMT, SMP, PM, S&M, etc.
I'd also worry about die size. Power dissipation is really only an issue in the portable market, which isn't that big (right now).
But die size will affect yield and price. I don't know where MOT and INTC are relative to each other re: process efficiency, but as they adopt smaller geometries and funky processes die size might become a gating factor to managing yield.
As the margins on the rest of the computer get driven into commoditized oblivion the price of the CPU will rise in relative importance.
(of course scale matters, too, but MOT should be able to keep the volumes up w/the embedded market)

This issue was hashed out soon after the intro of the "G3" Power Macs. Macintouch posted a discussion with a Somerset (PPC) engineer about 603e/750 support for SMP. They will support SMP, just not always efficiently, since they don't implement all the necessary cache coherency protocols.

This is demonstrated with quicktime. [snip]I get so tired of hitting "later" over and over again. I'm so glad that I finally found an mpg of the new trailer so I could show it wherever without having to have stupid quicktime
1) There's a well-known and very easy workaround for the annoyance dialog--set your system's clock ahead a year. Launch MoviePlayer. Click OK. Set your clock back to normal. QuickTime won't bother you again for a year. Adjust as necessary.
2) The Sorenson codec is simply awesome, and worth the free download to install QT3. It's better than any.mpg I've seen yet. The old "teaser trailer" is now available in Sorenson. Download it again and compare it to the old version. Trust me. It's worth it.
2. [snip] Anyone remember Microsoft Arcade for Mac . ..It took over 10 minutes to load Asteroids. I could load and play a whole game of Maelstrom in that time.
Just because it happens doesn't mean we have to like it. And we can fight it, too, by suppressing its use. "I could care less" is another one of these !@^%# phrases that means the exact opposite of what's intended, and we'd all be better off if people used the proper phrase.

Hear hear! Atalk was great for its time and its market. Slow and chatty, sure, but it was so simple even I could use it.
Two Macs, one cable, no hub, no fuss, easy filesharing.
Sure would suck to be scan-monkey if they're film.
What we really need is the /. analog of the binary thumbs-up/thumbs-down from Messrs. S&E, RIP.
Then again, if I could make a bit of a suggestion, I just did!

Then you need more practice!
Here's the CNN article from 4/6/97, describing the technology, and here's the direct link to the .mov that shows the eMate being powered by it.
