  1. Extremism is the exact word... on Interview With BitKeeper Author Larry McVoy · · Score: 1

Did anyone actually read RMS's recent reply?

He says that the "non-free parts of the Linux kernel" are firmware and bytecode and such that get downloaded to devices upon bootup.
Then he goes on to say that setting some registers is one thing, but this is different.

What the hell is he on?
Why is "setting a few registers" any different?
    What is code?
In my view- code is nothing more than a set of instructions.

Arghhh- it makes me want to just piss on his GPL and tell him that these "binaries" are in fact human-readable sourcecode- but he just doesn't speak the language :)

    "flambait" it is not-

I have tried to use Mozilla several times over the years, and actually am trying to use it right now.

    A couple specific responses-
"of course IE will be faster"
I don't care that IE is built in to the OS- dammit- opening a new window in Mozilla takes a *long* time compared to the same operation in IE.

    Stability?
You have *got* to be kidding me.
Mozilla is reasonably stable- but more stable than IE?
How often does IE crash for you?
I would say for me- it's about once per month.
Mozilla crashes far more often than that- tho I will say that it seemed like Java was involved in most of the crashes I've experienced.
(tabbed-browsing seemed to be a factor as well)

You know- I *really* hope Mozilla makes it- I *love* using it for mail- and browsing with it is nice as well.
But IE still just completely beats in in terms of speed and compatibility.
Additionally- the reliance of Mozilla upon Sun's JVM is a detriment.
Have you seen the kind of memory that the new JRE2 1.40 uses?
    It's fucking *ridiculous*.
And it's performance is lacking compared to the MS JVM

    Uhm- Yes :)

"The key is keeping the bit number function secret"

    Absolutely true.
But beyond that, it is also key to use a *different* bit number function for each transaction.
    (IE: a new pad)

    Why?
Because a given pad is generated for the length of the data.
You don't want to reuse this pad at another time, and furthermore since you don't want the pad "looping", you'd have to generate a longer pad for a longer dataset.

This gets back to the problem of a new pad having to be exchanged for *every* transaction.
Where- if that's possible, then you must already have some secure means of communication and don't need to encrypt anything in the first place.

    And yeah- Deltron :)

  6. Re:I doubt it on One-Time Pad Encryption With No Pad? · · Score: 1

    Good god yes.

This is so entirely fucking ridiculous that I refuse to read anymore.

Anyone who is involved in any sort of encryption knows that the key exchange is the most difficult part.

And further- if you can (truly) securely do a key axchange, then you don't need encryption at all- because you could have just delivered the message along with the key.
(since you have discoverd some secure way of delivering the key)

  7. Gimme my money back! on RIAA Almost Down To Pre-Napster Revenues · · Score: 1

    What am I paying for?
Now that mp3 swapping has removed the media from the equation, the RIAA claim that it's mostly the intellectual property that I'm paying for.

    Great, I'm all for that.
But what the hell was I paying for before?

Do you know how many copies of "Dark Side Of The Moon" I've bought?

Let's see- 1 on vinyl, 2 on cassette, and I believe 3 on CD.

Shit, I payed for the SAME intelectual property 6 seperate times!
I always thought you were charging me for the media, so I went along with it.
But now you've made it clear, it was the IP that I was paying for all along!

Well, I want my fucking money back.
You can keep your ~$4 for the actual production costs of the media, but please promptly return to me the ~$70 that I needlessly spent on additional copies of the same intellectual property.

Thank you RIAA for graciously pointing out my error in this matter.
