have you talked to the USPO? they can probably get it to russia for cheap.
doesn't russia have a postal service? they have frickin' stamps, they must have a postal service. maybe you can find someone reliable in moscow to forward the package once it's there.
the biggest problem is the rampant corruption and organized crime. Russia is worse now that Chicago was in the 1920's. It's doubtful a package would ever reach the outer areas.
I had some russian instructors at my university and they stopped visiting the homeland after being robbed and having their rental car stolen on their last trip.
I think the company "www.avrotec.com" is partnered with Microsoft and NASA to create the next generation "Highway In The Sky" ("HITS") aircraft instruments.
Supposedly, they will make it "as easy to fly as it is to drive a car". You just joystick your way through a tunnel/mesh to land and take off, and everything else is autopilot.
They run windows apps, too. Shame that NASA is using our tax dollars, partnered with MS, to create all this stuff, in what is essentially a closed consortium.
I think I'd be more comfortable if it was open sourced!
Does anyone know any more details on this project?
TrollTech makes available an excellent OO toolkit. The KDE desktop is based on same.
Many argue that QT is taking advantage of a free system to promote the non-free libraries.
Eventually, the libraries are released until the QPL.
Many whine that the developers in both the KDE/QT camps and the "opposing" GNOME camp are actually secret lovers, and it is the Linux Kommunity that causes all the outrage over the free/non-free issues.
Legal use of QT, as a developer in a pro environment (software for sale) costs more than twice that of Visual C++ Pro and Win NT combined.
Gnome advances much faster than many anticipated.
HP, Sun, Compaq, Eazel all throw in their support for Gnome, probably intending for it to replace their aging CDE desktops.
Shortly thereafter, Qt announces they will GPL their libraries, presumably a last ditch attempt at getting a share of the Linux future.
Competition once again servers the consumer. In a short time, Qt (and therefore KDE) will be free. This certainly helps Gnome advocates sink their teeth into a quality C++ toolkit.
it seems to me you're going through two major energy losses -- one to cool the nitrogen, one to convert it to steam.
with something like fusion power and ultra capacitors, you get a carnot loss at the generation plant, line losses, but a relatively simple powerplant with a fantastic torque curve (electric motor).
how long til the naysayers finally admit that ZEV electric vehicles are the future?
i worked at a place that had an NT machine doing backups.
the "tech-savvy" admin set a checkbox incorrectly in the backup configuration.
End result: 6 mos. of data lost, requiring several temps, a few weeks, and about $40K in costs to recover from offsite record storage.
Don't try to sell me that "windows people and windows software are immune to configuration errors" crap. it's a lie.
this was the second time in a year that a major work stoppage occurred due to the NT side from failed backups that were recorded as complete. the unix side had a grizzly unix hound that never lost a single file the whole time.
IMHO, i'd trust a person who rejects MS to do something right, and verify that it's right, much more than someone who thinks MS has a "natural right to dominate". it's just the philosophy of the individual and their character that makes the difference.
BTW, this article is just trolling for hits, i didn't bother reading the article.
Tom's reviews are always hard to read; mostly because of the bad grammer, spelling and logic, (like "....linux is securer than windows 2000...")
but, he is honest and doesn't hold back. that makes up for it.
Linux 3d is being handled very poorly. Several years ago, when Linux was struggling through issues with 2D, a lot of people wrote HOWTO's and webpages explaining how to cobble things together. XFree was honest about what did (and did not) work.
But now, anyone who visits the 3dfx newsgroups or the XFree site, then attempts to get their card working in 3d mode, will notice two things:
1) There are no HOWTO's or webpages dedicated to your card. When you ask a simple question, you will immediately be bombarded by three morons who say "why didn't you read through the last 712 messages! everything you need is there!"
2) XFree 4.0.1 documentation claims all sorts of miracles. But the truth is, the product does very little that is new unless you are willing to read the the 712 aforementioned messages and figure out how to disregard the 213 of then that are now outdated or innaccurate.
Many cards require a CVS download and rebuild of everything, plus a 2.3 series kernel, and many files from other sites. After you build everything and and apply all the hacks, don't be suprised if the your system locks after 20 seconds or so, like mine did.
Hate to say it, but XFree is really going out on a limb by calling this beast a "3D enabled release". It's a immature, undocumented 3D release being supported by a bunch of monkeys who refuse to properly document the 3D workarounds. The later 3.X releases were better documented, both by XFree and the card vendors, and more reliable in 3D mode.
The 2D side of 4.0.1 is stable, and the new server configuration stuff is wonderful. But this is not a quality 3D release by any means.
whether it's concorde maintenance or large aerospace projects, this mantra should be examined for it's validity before more lives or large projects are wasted.
as i recall, one of the major impediments to high power lasers has been energy lost to the amplification mirrors/lenses...major cooling systems to keep them from exploding...plus very heinous alignment issues.
now the USA might be able to use ground based lasers (ala missile command) to protect herself (and the other western democracies) from nuke-wielding totalitarian/terrorist nations.
he'll never get the 75%, but with sales of the book through brick 'n' mortar mixed in, that would be cool.
i've worked at two places where those nice people come in and put those "honor snacks" machines in. both times, the vender pulled them in a week or so.
some of the employees were quite honest about it -- especially if they were from the east coast -- something like "what, is this guy a frickin' idiot? i'm doing him a favor by eating all his snacks for free. i'm letting him know how stupid he is so he can get counselin' or sumthin'"
true, i swear it. the average person will steal if they think they can get away with it. myself? i always enjoy the look on people's faces when i return something to them that could of been easily stolen -- they give me that quizical look "why?" -- really makes my day:-)
i'm actually quite annoyed that with all these egg cams and video cam/capture boards, no one has written a decent netscape plugin or even a standalone app that lets me record and send a short mpeg to my associates via email attachment.
if i didn't have a day job wearing me down, i think this would be a killer app for all those people with cams and mics laying around.
please, don't yap about "just grab some mpg and send it" -- i'm taking about something integrated, easy to use, and simple to configure.
I have been given several free copies of Linux products, all of which were given to me at trade shows.
In retrospect, I now know this was an evil plot to indoctrinate me into the hellish world of free software.
In the past, I read these really cool (and totally objective) internet news and PC magazines that told me the truth about how great microsoft was, how stable the PC platform was, and how sending them hundreds of dollars a year for software was good for me and America.
It's terrible the way these free software people have warped my fragile little mind.

I thought MS was focused on eliminating CDs in the near future -- that is, the OS comes on the 'puter you buy, and only licensed depots have CDs.
This way, you send in your bad hard drive to get an exchange or repair.
Obviously, for this to work, HDs have to have some type of individual id, to prevent DD 'duping.

Dr. Michael Cowpland accepts position at Redhat, overseeing the new transmeta-based Amiga.
If the app runs for more than 5 minutes without crashing, version 1.0, baby.

There are many comments about Motif in this section that are just plain wrong, given the recent release of Open Motif!
It would be very nice to see these comments corrected before this document is released. Please see www.motifzone.com
There is no way 10 billion people and an industrialized economy can effect the environment.
Buy an SUV.
Eat red meat.
Vote Bush.
keep that thing away from my...well, you figure it out.
Just look at the X/Motif popup menu handling.
...he's accepted a CEO position for an Amiga "comeback" company, using transmeta chips running the Linux kernel.
By the hammer of Grabthar, I swear it to be true.
Feel sorry for those people, though...death spirals suck.
...yeah, nuthin' quite like the smell of a phat class action lawsuit.

Damn, OJ and Microsoft. That's an ugly picture.
With OJ, one byatch got screwed and eventually murdered.
With Gates...all the world is a byatch...
RMS, Linus Torvalds, Maddog Hall, Alan Cox, Bruce Perens and Eric Raymond should all do guest appearances.
See? Linux really does solve all problems.
