I try to explain what open source is to these folks every time I go to a conference and address attendees but I always feel like I fall short explaining what open source actually is. These folks like most normal non geek people can't grasp that it's free and superior!

Keep in mind most of these people come from the background that "nothing in life is free" (and if it is, it's usually a sham)

I'm a senior graduating this year from college and I faced the same problem as you. From what I've found from doing some research and talking to people (and actually working out in the field) that it's better to go get a job now since a lot of places don't hire people with advanced degrees because they think they'll expect too high of a salary. I've worked with people with Ph.D.'s and also with people who were self taught. Some of the people that were self taught were better programmers than the ones with advanced degrees. I'm not saying this applies to all cases, but it is possible :) So go get a job and get some experience!

at an ISP i used to work for a programmer got fired for writing such horrible code that was very difficult to understand (he had no formal coding training) i.e. if his program core dumped, he just wrote a wrapper to delete the core so it would keep running. eventually when we tried to update all of our machines we couldnt because his code was so limiting and no upgradable.

lesson learned: do not promote your own job security through obscurity. you'll get burnt in the end.

I would suggest putting floppy drives in all of these if you are short on cash. this way you can save some money on expensive nic ROMs. If you do have the money look at getting nic cards with ROM chips on them so you can boot them all using bootp. (from what i last say, each ROM is ~40)

the first cluster i set up didn't have harddrives and i nfs mounted the filesystems across the network. worked pretty well but it was a pain to get working.
