  2. Yet Another LOTR Review on Review:Fellowship of the Ring · · Score: 1

I was never sure this day would come. I finally get to see the LOTR as a true motion picture!! Well, I went in to the theater knowing that many things were going to be cut out. But, after watching it, I think Jackson made the most of it. Obviously he cut out many of the minor details, mostly the drudgery I suppose, and turned it into more of an action-oriented story.

One major thing I noticed was the overwhelming time spent on Saruman. I enjoyed the wizard battle but after that I was somewhat surprised at the amount of "airtime" that Saruman got. However, I think Saruman played his role convincingly and it worked well for the movie.

The one part of the movie that I enjoyed the most was the Mines of Moria. Extremely well done, especially the Balrog scene which was very true to the book. The cave troll scene was also very exciting. In fact it was so well done that I was scared out of my wits when Frodo appeared to be killed by the cave troll, but then I remembered the mithril mail.

One other thing I must comment on. I found Hugo Weaving playing the role of Elrond somewhat amusing. During the entire Rivendell scene I was seeing flashbacks from "The Matrix". I envisioned Frodo calling up Tank and asking for an exit after Elrond told him to bring the ring forward. But anyways...

Overall I think the first movie was very well done and I will definitely be making multiple trips back to the movie theater to see it this Christmas season.

I would also like to toss in my 2 cents. You are absolutely correct. The door is essentially closed for federal funding only. That does not mean that this research will not go on privately. Who ever sent that story in was hoping to spread FUD. With all the moral/ethical implications of this whole issue I am very happy that my tax dollars will not be going toward this research.

For those who disagree with me, why don't you put your $$ where your mouth is and fund private organizations that are looking to research this? Or you could just whine about it and drag this out into a big huge argument, oh wait that's already happened. Well, you get the picture.

There is A LOT more to Java than just web page applets. The whole spirit of Java is to provide compatibility. Java is also a quite capable programming language in which to build any kind of application. I have been using Java for 1 and 1/2 years in college and have thouroughly enjoyed it. I hope the OEM's decide to put Java in their machines because it would be a pity to see Java applications go down the drain on Win32. Especially when I've spent all this time learning it :).

I think you are definitely correct. IBM has been around in the computing world seemingly forever and I think everyone in computer related businesses could learn from their attitude toward technologies. I know I have a lot of respect for IBM, heck I may even work for them in a few years after I graduate with my CS degree. We'll just have to see.

  7. Re:Suggestion on Global Warming: Do You Believe? · · Score: 2

I definitely agree, Jon Katz isn't presenting the full story and his logic is fuzzy.

Katz says the U.S. is becoming one of the most resented countries in the world. Hello Katz! The U.S. has ALWAYS been one of the most resented countries because of its prosperity. The rest of the world loves to belittle the U.S. for any reason it can come up with because of its prosperity.

    Next Katz talks about surveys:

67% of Americans surveyed believed that increased carbon dioxide and other gases released into the atmosphere would, if unchecked, lead to global warming and increasing average temperatures.

Since when does the general public have the scientific knowhow to analyze factors and trends in the Earth's chemical content? They think that because its what they are TOLD by the liberal media not because they have made a scientific analysis of the situation.

Katz goes on to say that this issue is going to capture large amounts of attention and that our nation's president is definitely on the unpopular side. Katz, the environmentalist left has been preaching this for decades. The truth is that global warming is NOT based on fact it is based on scare tactics. If the rest of the world jumped off a bridge would the U.S jump too? I'm proud that our president has stood up for his belief that environmentalism, when carried to the extreme, is very unhealthy for everybody. If you believe that global warming is truly a threat, do your homework and research the topic instead of blindly trusting liberal rhetoric. You'll find that global warming is actually at odds with science and is just another political tool.
