I am not an expert on the technical details involved, but a solution seems plain enough. Allow those of us who generate enough electricity for our own needs to get off the grid completely. Fine, you don't want to pay me for my "free power" you didn't have to build power plants to provide, so let me opt out. I'll install a bank of Tesla backup batteries in my garage and take my chances.
OP mentioned project management background and desire to move more in that direction. One thing to consider is the PRINCE 2 certification in Europe or PMP for those in the States in similar situtations.
What with all the complexities of statecraft, isn't it possible this was no accident? Perhaps it was meant as a bid to get Netanyahu's attention and subtly express French and US government positions on the Israel/Palestine question. Food for thought.
While watching the panel you moderated at this year's TAM with Bill Nye, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Pamela Gay and Lawrence Krauss I noticed several instances of tension between Tyson and Krauss on issues like funding, cosmology and others things. The question is, is this a good thing or a bad thing? I ask because it appears science is assaulted from many sides and I wonder if internal strife helps or hinders progress?
It's interesting to read about Werners buying Macs for those employees who wish to use them. I wonder if Michael Dell would let me use one at corp HQ?:-)
Just to be clear, Austin Energy has not reneged on anything. I simply want to be able to opt-out if/when the economics don't make sense.
Totally cool with that if they are willing to make it cost effective.
Due to state law my solar is wired into the grid and I cannot disconnect them.

Still haven't had time to play it for more than an hour, but it looks promising and immersive.
