"Even broadcast news is all opinion pieces these days". These days? Where have you been? Under a rock? MSNBC = Liberal Democratic FOX = Conservative Republican. Try watching John Stewart more, he can point these things out to you. Steven Colbert bases his whole show on being a take off on any Fox new channel.

"Newsprint is just a physical media. " This is a truism. "Most" people I know, including myself, buy a paper before taking public transport to work in the AM. I used to have both the NY Times and NY Daily News delivered, but found I didn't really need or want daily delivery which sometimes didn't happen because the person delivering screwed up (when I was subscribed to the News, the first month I was missing 6 issues). I would prefer some kind of electronic device that I could download my morning papers to. I know that the Kindle (which is kind of clunky) has the Times, but I haven't tried it because I haven't ascertained whether you get the entire paper or not and the device itself is inelegant and quite expensive. Plastic Logic [http://www.plasticlogic.com/] is coming out with a very nice e-ink device in early 2009 that could be promising if the pricing is right. "The newsprint was about 1/3 of the cost. But 1/3 less is 1/3 less." and think about all those trees you'd be saving. "Oh, the horror!"

I love Ubuntu, have used it for a while. One of the main reasons for my getting a NetBook, however is to be able to read EBooks on it. Being about the same price as a good Windows Mobile PDA, but with more versatility and a much larger screen, I'd like to use them to read the books, but can't find satisfactory software to use. Suggestions?

According to a study reported in Time Magazine, people who engaged in social activity and reading were much happier than those that engaged in passive recreational activities such as watching television. Tweens and Teens and the much lauded 18 to 34 demographic are much more involved in activities like on line gaming and social networking sites, not to mention texting all our friend. So I guess we must be pretty happy. Who's got time for TV?

Organic chemistry and organic medicinals were two of the hardest courses I've ever encountered and I hated them while I was taking them. I'm much older now and I find that that what I learned so many years ago has stuck in my mind somehow and I'm glad of it. I encounter things almost daily where that knowledge is quite relavent to my profession.

Being a pharmacist allows me to speak with some authority on this. Many drugs have what are called " Off Label" uses. This means that doctors sometimes prescribe them for conditions that are not included in what the drugs were approved for. Having practiced in many a high-income neighborhood, Provigil almost since its introduction has been used as a performance enhancing drug. After filling prescriptions for an increasing number of obviously non narcoleptic patients I asked a few doctors what they were using it for. Most patients were men who were mid to high level executive positions who felt they needed an "edge" on their competitors in the business world, or were using the drug to combat jet lag. Yes EVERY drug has side effects. The thing is that when the benefits out weigh the side effects you use the drug for what it's good for.

Personally, I love to read. I, however don't have a lot of space to store books and call me a bleeding heart liberal tree hugger if you will, I have decided I don't want to use dead trees. I don't have a Kindle or Sony book reader or any other of the $400 and up book readers that have come out on the market. I have a 5 year old Toshiba e800 Pocket PC running both Mobipocket and Ereader software (forget about Microsoft's software) and have about 1500 novels and short stories, biographies etc on my HD and carry around about 20 or 30 books on a 2Gb CF card at any one time. What did it cost? $165 used and $0 for software. Books are available for free at various sites and at a vastly reduced price (as compared to regular books ) at other sites like http://fictionwise.com/
