PETA refused even to talk to the owner of PETA.org. Going to NSI for domain dispute is supposed to be your last resort, it was PETA's first. Well first legal resort, this mickey mouse group's first attempt was by cross posting an message on news groups encouraging people to email bomb and threaten and harass the owner of PETA.org.
Try win2000 and have it work right the first time!
Obviously you have never used Windows2000. Fortunatly, my workplace banned it's use over major security flaws we found, but not after some of us played with it and found it to be horrible horrible joke.
You actually illustrated one of the best points to using linux over windows. Being able to fix stuff.
It was documented, not in plain english, but in actual code. Since we are talking about developers here, there is no better documentation for an API than to see the code itself, and that is where the advantage is. Now, did you submit this patch back to the mantainer so all could benefit?
As an ethical vegetarian, how do you feel about PETA's attempt to steal ringlingbrothers.com and put up an anti circus site. Or their "unhappy meal" thing that looks just like a McDonalds meal including the Ronald mascot holding a bloddy knife?
PETA is a joke, they are a bunch of irresponsible, childish hate-mongers who tolerate no other view than their own. They deserve to be attacked and ridiculed at every opportunity by those who support free speach. Not due to their beliefs, but due to their actions.
Hey, I'm a strong support of the 2nd amendment and the right to bear arms, but I don't like the NRA. Just because you share their beliefs doesn't mean you have to like them. Look into some of the crazy things PETA has done, like initiating terror campaigns against their enemies. The recently cross-posted a message on newsgroups encouraging people to mail bomb and threaten this guy for his peta.org site.
I agree that the trial made linux catch up faster, my point was that it was inevitable. Eventually there would have been enought demand for Dell computers preinstalled with Linux that they would have risked M$'s anger and done it anyway. My point simply is that Linux was winning an upward battle without the DOJ's help, and would have eventually won either way.
When you make a system call, you know what is going to happen. No hidden APIs, no undocumented 'features' to bite you in the ass, and it follows well documented standards.
Hmm. Do you think this would have happened before Judge Jackson?
Yes, I do. Linux was growing at a phenominal rate before the whole anti-trust thing, and will continue to grow after it. While I don't doubt that M$ getting bitch-slapped (seems to be the work for the day here) has helped Linux win support, I do NOT believe that it is the sole reason. Linux is faster, more stable, and simply better for many jobs than Windows. And while Windows has it beat in some areas, Linux is improving, while Windows seems to be regressing (from the looks of their win2k joke).
I hope history doesn't record the Microsoft case as the reasong some unknown little operating system came into being, since Linux was on the way to overtaking Windows anyway.
True, but I when I said chat client I was thinking of IM/ICQ/YAHOO/MSN/Jabber chat clients. For some reason I forgot about irc.
None of the above mentioned clients have a scripting language, even microsoft (who would probably put a scripting language in everyting if they had time) hasn't seen fit to add one to a chat client.
Not to say that someone won't in the future, but for now, there is nothing to worry about with these programs (unless you are dumb enough to blindly execute every file someone sends you)
Gnutella did NOT have a worm. They had someone hosting a vb script. That's like saying that ftp has a worm because some goober hosts a vb script on his ftp server.
I do not believe that ANY chat client has the ability to execute code or even a scripting language, and if someone sends someone else a file that has a virus, that isn't a worm it's two stupid users.
Oh wow. When did this happen? I just did that with gaim and it promptly logged in and knocked my licq session off. Am I right in understanding that I can send and recieve ICQ messages over gaim now?
Please check out the software before you rant about it. Berlin is NOT a window manager, it is a complete (or will be) windowing system (like xfree86).
Or if they want to start theoir own project why don't they develop something new and innovative. Another window manager? Give me a break!
I would say a new windowing systems is pretty new and from their feature list and screenshots looks pretty innovative. Pay attention before shooting your mouth off.
I'm pretty sure it's out of the Presidents hands. It's possible that Clinton encouraged Reno to persue this case, but now it's in the courts. The trial has occured and a ruling has been made. It's not like Reno can retract the whole case. Who ever is in Reno's place after Billy's gone isn't going to be able to stop it either.
I always loved the secret worlds in Metroid. The basic idea was, you shoot open a door, stand in it and let it close on you. Then you press down (to go into a ball) and up as fast as you can to kind of slid your way up into the wall. Then you hit the jump button to bring the screen point of view up with you. Do this enough and you will have horrible cramps in your hand, and you might make it into a bizzar secret world. This world may or may not have gravity, bad guys, power ups, doors that lead to nowhere, etc.
It was a fun way to waste time with a old favorite Nintendo game.
Your point is well taken, but what is government today but the legal arm of large corporations. Sure, you have a small say in it, but you better believe that AOL/Time has a much louder voice.
I knew someone was going to try to sound superior by bringing up history. Look, we all agree that government involvment in the initial protocols, but was ARPANET popular? No. The internet only grew AFTER it was released into the 'public domain' as it were.
Is corporate control better? Of course not, but one could argue that there is no corporate control over the net. There is only government control at the request of corporations (and who would turn down a request from your contributor?)
Bad idea. You want your taxes going to the internet? Well, expect them to rise quite a bit. Also, the notion of freedom we try to keep....gone. Welcome regulations, internet taxes, and rules made by people who couldn't find the on switch on a PC, let alone understand encryption.
The primary reason the internet is working is due to its LACK of regulation and government involvment.
Kind of like slashdot readers.
Speak for yourself, fellow slashdot reader.

Two projects that died that I wish would be revived:
FreeDCE

Trust me, they are not eating any money. If it weren't free, very few people would be using it.
Otherwise, I agree with your points.

Possibly, but I think it will be too far into it for him to stop it if he's elected. It might be too far already.
I don't think he can, that's my point. They have already been convicted and sentenced.

The difference is, Bill Gates isn't on a golf course looking for the "real" company

Big deal, to claim millions in damages makes this sound like a frivolous lawsuit and makes adobe look like a bunch of babies.
The first posters comments very true, if anything else, this became an announcment for their new product that money couldn't buy. Now everyone knows.
