Sweet. Now I'm gonna go get my left arm hacked off and get a harpoon launcher installed for the javelin throw. Or, to put it in a way slashdot understands... 1: Get amputation(s). 2: Get prosthetics with a mechanical advantage over mere flesh. 3: ??? 4: Profit!

I'm getting a chainsaw on mine!

It's a way to punish and stop the consumption. In a politician's vote grubbing little brain, by stopping any form of child porn they'll be stopping the consumption by those degenerate sub human folks who like it. Of course, actually addressing the problem of why these folks like child porn in the first place is out of the question - even though it would be cheaper to treat those people than spend the billions in law enforcement.

Demonizing and punishing folks show "strength" and that "they're doing something about it." Considering rational and cheaper ways to actually stop the problem is considered "pandering" and "weak". Just look at our drug laws and legal system regarding that. Nothing has been accomplished and in the meantime, we have one the highest incarceration rates in the World.

One section is designed to make it clear that live Webcam broadcasts of child abuse are illegal, which the bill's authors argue is an "open question."

OK, child abuse is illegal for one thing, so if they're broadcasting an illegal act, what's the point of making the broadcast itself illegal. I guess so the prosecutor can add another charge to the list and eliminate it in the plea negotiation?

    Fucking politicians....

Some stuff is just unspeakably evil, or unspeakably dumb. A market for medical knowledge gained unethically, for example. This is one of those can/should discussions: the fact that an action is possible doesn't make it a bright idea:...

Who would get hurt if there was a market of this type? If anything, it would save lives. I don't see anything unethical about it. If there was anything that was unethical it was the politicians killing this for political points.

There's a huge industry that bets on when people will die. Is it unethical? It's kept many families from becoming destitute after the death of the bread winner. I'm talking about life insurance.

FutureMap: This program hoped to use a kind of terrorism futures market to predict key developments and even attacks. It was thought market valuations of possible future events could reflect the probability of their occurring. However, FutureMap was scrapped in 2003 after the notion of betting on terrorist atrocities was called "ridiculous and grotesque" by US politicians.

I really wanted to see if it would work - grotesque or not. It intrigued me that a "market" could be formed for things that aren't being bought and sold. And I wanted to see if the market could predict things.

However they have now asked for direct read-only access to our Oracle database, to be able to run ad-hoc queries without consulting us.

Why not set up an account that has read only access? Why not create a view of the table that shows only the columns they need? It'll be good customer service and relations. Just remember, your company can be replaced and if you don't give them the service they want they'll get it somewhere else.
